As the old English adage says, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Scientists have shown that when the brain focuses on many aspects of a task, it does not focus on the passing of time ("Why having fun makes time speed"). On the same note, while a person continues focusing all their energy on one task, it seems like every component amplifies. For example, when a person has fun, they tend to do better work. In “The Summer of Ordinary Ways” by Nicole Lea Helget, “Summer Stars” by Carl Sandburg and the lives of children in warring states, people have remained so focused on the more positive aspects of their life that they didn’t pay attention to changing times. For example, when children are out with their friends, they do not pay attention to the time. They pay attention to the company they have and when it’s time to go, they’re upset. However, if they had been paying attention to the time, they wouldn’t have a real reason to be upset. This shows that fun overshadows the time it takes to enjoy it. Nicole “Colie” Helget writes of her life in her memoir, “The Summer of Ordinary Ways”. As a child, she saw a lot. As she says when her father first breaks the nose of their cow, “Like eggs dropped on the wooden floor of the chicken coop. Or metal bats whacking leather-covered baseballs. There was something of a wooden ruler slapping
