Greenhouse Effect For the past ten thousand years the earth's climate has been extremely beneficial to mankind. However, nowadays major changes are taking place. Human beings are changing the face of the entire planet by destroying the rain forests and pumping toxins into the air. Some of these gases are very poisonous and they are destroying our ozone layer which allows life to exist on earth. These things are changing the structure of the earth's biosphere and its heat balance in a very negative way. In the past decade the greenhouse effect has gained much attention with the media. In overpopulated areas, like China, the amounts of methane and carbon dioxide are growing. Some scientists believe the greenhouse effect is directly related to the earth's warming, others believe it's a cycle of earth's temperatures. Global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature due to the use of fossil fuels and other industrial processes, leading to a build-up of greenhouse gasses. Generally, the atmosphere contains mainly nitrogen and oxygen with trace amounts of water vapour. Now, due to excessive release of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides from fossil fuels, methane from organic waste materials and other gases begin to be part of the atmosphere. The heat capacity of the atmosphere increases as the amount of the emission increases. The ultraviolet ray from the sun normally bounces back into space but now it is absorbed by these gases through radiation. As the heat is absorbed, the more turbulent the atmosphere becomes. Much like how a greenhouse reflects some of the infra-red heat energy although some is trapped inside the
