The story “Greasy Lake” takes place around the 1980s. It also was inspired by a song Bruce Springsteen wrote. The narrator tells us that the lake, which used to be called Wakan by the indians, is now basically a dump. It was once known for is beauty and now has broken glass and beer cans strewn up and down the banks. It is a place where the kids come to hang out, because they feel independent and “bad”. There are three main characters in the story. The narrator, Jeff; who was thinking about dropping out of school, and Digby; whose parents paid for his college tuition. They all have “bad boy” qualities about them. The narrator says they wear torn leather jackets, do drugs, drink beer, and stole their mothers car. Little do they know as the story goes on, their night turns from good to almost a never ending death trap. The boys learn that they are not as grown up as they think, and realize they were going down a bad road. The point of view in this story is coming from the narrator, first person. It is not the best perspective, as it only gives us one view point of the story. Although seeing everything from one person’s point of view can be good as for the narrator was around during all their conspicuous acts. If told in third person, we would not get the full meaning of the narrators thoughts. If I had to suggest this story, Greasy Lake, or The Yellow Wallpaper I would probably tell my friend to read Greasy Lake. It talks about youth and how we think we are invincible but really we do not know anything about this world. During the short story Greasy Lake, the kids end up getting into dangerous positions that almost lead to jail, or maybe even their own death. Towards the end of their “bad boy” scenario I could see a change in their attitudes. I would definitely suggest this story to a friend of
