Deb McGowan knows the power of clothes. She was among seven teachers from across the United States to win a fashion makeover this summer from Jones New York in the Classroom, which included a $1,500 clothes shopping spree in the Big Apple. McGowan, 52, has always been a sensible dresser, but this school year, the second-grade teacher at Earl Boyles Elementary has added some pizzazz to her wardrobe and to her spirit. Not only did the makeover boost her self-confidence, but it may bolster her students' attitudes as well. There is little research showing a correlation between teacher attire and student achievement or behavior, but some students and teachers across the Portland area believe it makes a difference.
Below is a sample argumentative essay written by a fifth grader. What parts can be improved upon? Schools should keep serving chocolate milk. There should be chocolate milk because kids like it, it gives vitamins, and it gets kids in good habits. “Everything seemed fine, until we put our cake into the oven. We noticed that the cake was not rising at all, it just stayed flat.” Lisa informed our reporters. According to Victoria Smith, a student in Group B, they did inform the teacher and Mrs. Smith had said was,”Its okay, you did it right.” This answer put a look of confusion over every student in Group B, except Lisa, who soon figured out why it had happened. Lisa told our reporters, “After a while, I noticed the reason that our cake didn’t rise was because there was no baking soda in it.” Even though they found out what was missing, just like group A, they were still wondering what the answer to the question
(Bovey, Stain 2003). Mr. Collet did this in his classroom by letting children help develop the homework policy, with all the different learning abilities in his classroom. In the classroom that I will be teaching in, high school resource room juniors and seniors, the policy will work well. Especially at this age children need to let their parents know what they are doing at school. When they take the homework policy home, the parents have a good idea what would be expected of them concerning their homework.
For those that live in poverty, working hard to achieve a goal means to work as much as you can so you can have electricity for the month or a decent meal. In this part of her essay “Ghetto Fabulous”, Tina Fakhrid-Deen brings up the issue of growing up in poverty. “At Halloween, we got yelled at or whipped for throwing eggs, not because it was childish and rude, but because we were screwing with the food supply.” (Fakhrid-Deen: 156) Many kids get to act as kids do because they do not have to worry if they are affecting how they will receive their next meal. For kids that live in poverty many will always have the burden of worrying if they will go to bed hungry at night instead of going out and doing wasteful
Katherine also loves to bake, and has about the same amount of experience, but her specialty is making homemade candies and fudge. We determined between my cakes and pies and her candies the bakery would have a variety of items on the menu, but not too many were as we would become overwhelmed. Katherine and I both have an accounting background therefore we will both be involved in writing a business plan. We will put an equal amount of money into the business for startup cost such as a business license and permit, register our business name, get a tax identification number from the IRS, and purchasing equipment and ingredients. My husband has a marketing degree, and has volunteered to market the business.
If Maria’s suggestion would have been put in place it would have resulted in even better profits. Molly McCans November 22,2011 Block 4 Pass Me the Storage Bin “ you’re living in a pig pen! This room is so gross and disgusting. How can you live like this?” Those words coming out of my moms mouth are all I can remember. So my bedroom had toys, dirty clothes, clean clothes, and trash all over the place? What was an eight year old supposed to do, I’d rather play with my Bratz dolls than clean my bedroom.
Williams keys in the trash can and make her miss her doctors appointment?” She asked over and over getting the same response out of me. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about, why would I throw Mrs, Williams’ keys away? I love Mrs. Williams!” I stated over and over as my eyes began to water and eventually I lost control of my emotions. I must have been in her office for a good hour denying everything she asked me, because I knew deep down in my heart it was not me. I then proclaimed to her in tears, “All I did was hide her chalk in the flower pot!” At that point I was just ready to go back to the class because this lady was intimidating and persistent with her masculine figure yelling and screaming in my face.
