Many people question why it is that Edward Snowden leaked the documents showing what the NSA was doing. In the article “The Geeks who Leak” MichaelKelley Scherer quotes Edward Snowden saying “The public needs to decide whether these programs and policies are right or wrong". Edward Snowden feels that we should have a right to say whether what the NSA and Government does it right or wrong and whether we want hem to interfere in our personal lives when I comes so social media or not. He has been charged with theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person. Two of these three charges violates the Espionage act of 1917 which was intended to criminalize individuals who engaged in spying.
What if the people who was supposed to protect you from danger were the ones who put you in it? What if 9/11, one of the most tragic days in America’s history, was caused by our own government? What if this was an inside job? Could our government have masterminded this horrific crime? Actually, I believe they did, I personally believe that the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and the crashing of Flight 93 does not accurately add up to it’s ashes.
Source 13 and 15 agree with the statement that the journalist played a key role, source 14 disagreed that the journalist played a key role. One source that agrees with the statement that the journalist played a key role is source 13. The source shows how the media did play a key role as they received praise form MPs because of their involvement in the Belgrano scandal. Source 13 states “ I would like to pay public tribute to the work of the daily mail journalist” and the source went on to say that the journalist Paul foot “kept the Belgrano campaign moving”. This shows that the journalist is getting a great deal of praise for it involvement in the uncovering of the Belgrano scandal and the source also highlights that the journalist were the reason for the campaigns continuation.
In Clayman vs Obama, Judge Richard echoed that surveillance and collection of telephony data by NSA without the knowledge of the general public was against the spirit of the constitution of America. He said that the right to privacy is a right that needs to be guaranteed by the state. The right should not be taken away from the persons by the state. In another ruling ten days after the first one, J. William in ACLU vs Clapper arrived at a diametrically opposite decision with a different reasoning. The judge appreciated the right to privacy as envisioned under the constitution but argued that the value of intelligence outweighed the right.
Fear Over Privacy Security is supreme for the development of any nation. Today we are living in a world where security is increasingly being threatened by terrorists across the globe. The National Security Agency (NSA) working for privacy protection now has become a threat to American citizens. NSA is keeping track of every American’s internet use, activities, and phone calls which is the violation of fourth amendment, Right of Privacy, of US constitution. Varvel is against this and uses privacy as main theme of his cartoon.
Thesis: Edward Snowden is a whistleblower, he is interested in the general welfare of the people and is willing to sacrifice his privileged life in the US for the protection of rights and safety of US citizens. Edward Snowden is a twenty-nine-year-old NSA(National Security Agency) contractor through the Oahu office in Hawaii. He discovered and began collecting top-secret documents regarding domestic surveillance practices the NSA had been performing. He fled to Hong Kong and began printing documents that he had leaked to them conveying spying practices against citizens of the US. The government reacted by charging Snowden under the Espionage Act, he is also seen as a heroic whistleblower looking out for his country.
This is done to prevent a terrorist from using a student status as a cover-up to allow admittance to this country with the intention to commit acts of terrorism. There are many different surveillance methods that the government uses to spy on terrorist suspects, including email, financial records, and store receipts. But, one of the most common methods of surveillance that the government uses is roving wiretaps. This is tapping into phone calls. “The government says roving wiretaps are needed to deal with technologically sophisticated terrorists.” (Abramson & Godoy) But, one of the negatives of wiretapping is that the government might make an excuse for using it to monitor terrorism with the real intention to spy on foreign
This brings issue of how can one be against torture, but when a scenario as the ticking time bomb is presented he or she then accepts the reality that torture needs to be warranted. McCain states that in the rare instance, the interrogator might try extreme measures to extract information to save lives may not be granted as a success when judging his actions in which he accomplished the task (Page699). In my opinion, this is horrible and where I lose sense of reality on how someone could believe in such act. The lives of American people are saved due to the heroic acts of the interrogator. Understanding the moral concept of torture being wrong but in this case the use of torture used to terrorist attacks on innocent people.
In an attempt to prepare for and prevent future acts of terror, the government implemented the USA PATRIOT Act on October 26, 2001. This act lessened the restrictions on law enforcement agencies in regards to their gathering of intelligence within the United States. The act also gives law enforcement officers the right to search a home or business without the owner’s or the occupant’s consent or knowledge. The act of making these clear violations of a person’s privacy was highly controversial but approved in the unremitting post 9/11 pursuit of justice. According to The Washington Post, more than 263 government organizations were either created or reorganized following the attacks.
There were many reasons why the consolidated terror watch-list was created. The main reason it was created was to help the government and other agencies slow down the time of processing people’s names in the computer. Data governance that would help the organization manage the availability, usability, integrity, and security of the data seems to be missing. It would help increase the security, data quality privacy, and compliance with government regulation. The FBI Terrorist Screening Center was established to standardize and organize information about suspected terrorist between multiple government agencies into a single list to enhance communication between agencies.
