“We must not look at goblin men, We must not buy their fruits: Who knows upon what soil the fed Their hungry, thirsty roots.” (42-44) Rossetti, the author of Goblin Market, goes through the steps to the journey of temptation and whether or not it is possible to avoid the temptation. In the poem, Goblin Market, Laura and Lizzie come across goblin men who are selling fruit. They don’t know these men and are trying to avoid the temptation that is being set out in front of them. In this, Rossetti is trying to show the reader different steps into temptation and how to avoid it. This essay will talk about how Rossetti used Laura and Lizzie and they poem to express the way we, as humans, get tempted. Rossetti secretly inserts different steps to temptation. Rossetti starts off with Lizzie and Laura on their daily trip. As they are there, they hear the goblin men singing and trying to sell there fruit. This here is the first beginning stage of temptation. This is the first step on the journey through temptation, because here, Lizzie and Laura may not realize it because its their daily trip. Rossetti is symbolizing that we can be continuing on with life and doing our regular routine but their may be one small thing that just throws it off a touch, and that little touch can then lead into temptation. In this, a person might get awkward feelings or unusual feelings. Lizzie and Laura, get nervous, excited, anxious, curious, and embarrassed and yet Laura tries to listen. These emotions may express that something is unusual and most likely shouldn’t be happening. Rossetti is suggesting that in these couple points, temptation is starting to arise. Lizzie then runs home and Laura stays because the goblins are slowly reeling her in. “When its last restraint is gone.” Here it says, Laura tries to resist but gives in. The goblins succeed in reeling her in and kept Laura curious.
