The working title of this presentation was called: “Globe to Globe Visits Prison, or, To Whom Does Shakespeare Belong?” This event took place on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Mr. Steve Rowland, who is a well-known documentary maker, came to Oxford College of Emory University and gave a very touching presentation about the impact of Shakespeare’s work throughout prisons. He talked more in depth of what he had sought out to do and his vision for the end product. Mr. Rowland told me that he has not decided on what he wanted to do with all of these clips that they have been recording for over a year. Steve Rowland first started out by telling us his vision of what he wanted to achieve through this project. He first showed us some clips that he witnessed at the Globe to Globe International Shakespeare Festival, London. He showed us three performances that was videotaped of musical and theatrical aspects of three of Shakespeare’s works. The first one was The Winter’s Tale and was performed by a group of Nigerians. I found this one to be interesting in how they performed it because they didn’t have as much props, if I must say, but they were still able to get the point across about the story and how it all ended. The second one was called Henry IV, Part 1 and it was performed by a group of people who were from Mexico. The liveliness of their performance really shined out to me because from seeing the one before about The Winter’s Tale, I was able to understand more of the story. It was more colorful and the actors came off of the stage and did an interpretation in dance form. The last performance that Steve Rowland showed us was about the story of Shakespeare’s Othello. This one was more understandable to everyone because it was written like a hip hop rap. The story was clearly conveyed through the lyrics and it was easy to comprehend. I really enjoyed this one the most because I am more into modern and mainstream music.
