Giganomics: And what don’t you do for a living? Nowadays there is common trend in some industries like IT to work as portfolio workers or as contractors. New employment phenomenon due to such trend appeared and it is being called giganomics. Lets consider pro and contra of such a workstyle. First of all, let’s consider what person is expecting from the work? Probably first answer will be money enough to satisfy at least basic needs , then development of professional skills during career, working in the productive atmosphere with nice people and some social package like paid vacation, paid sick leaves , life insurance and some other pleasant things. No doubt, that each of us has his/her own level of needs, but as for me - all mentioned can be reached if person become top manager in the company. What does it lead? Usually, person become workaholic with decision-making even during picnics with family. So here we come with the second point of expectations from the work – its freedom. Freedom in wide sense – in making decisions, in ability to spend personal time without work, ability to choose where from and how much to work. So could be these 2 points (high income + freedom) achievable for employees? I would answer – in very rarely cases. Working as portfolio worker you can manage your path. You can select your bosses (diversifying you risks), choose the way you work and price for your work. Finally, you can manage your time by yourself. Surely, probably you don’t get those social packages, but doesn’t it look like just as some extra money over your salary when you are an employee? Being portfolio worker does not provide some guarantees for future and one cannot be sure 100% about the future incomes mostly, but are you really secured about not being fired one perfect day?
