Recent controversy has been spared over and around two recent articles that originated as commencement speeches. David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” given to the graduating class at Kenyon college in 2005 was a revolutionary moment in the history of Commencement speeches because instead of traditional motivational tactics he tried to explain to the graduates how to better use their educations. A similar speech “Congratulations, by the way” was given by George Saunders and tried to touch upon the same message but failed to clearly see Wallace’s message. One clear difference in these two speeches is apparent by just looking at the message that the author is trying to convey to the audience. Wallace starts his speech by saying “liberal
Both King and Thoreau effectively utilize all three of these in their essays. King, however, uses more pathos in his argument. By asking many rhetorical questions he attempts to sympathize with his audience, making them feel that their ideas are valid and important, even though he is just preparing to refute them. For example, on page 2, King says, “You may well ask, 'Why direct action, why sit-ins, marches, and so forth? Isn't negotiation a better path?'
Distinctive voices first makes us think about what the word ‘voice’ means. It is easy to understand that speeches and plays are spoken texts but for this elective students have to understand that written texts such as poems and novels also create a sense of voice. In Martin Luther King's speech, we see that he is making a plea for change. Kings speech was delivered in Washington in 1963, as the finale to a protest march of more than 200,000 people demanding jobs and political rights for African-Americans. ‘I have a Dream’ is one of the best known speeches of the twentieth century, a thoughtful and rousing call to social justice that clearly conveys King’s impatience with continuing racial discrimination.
His speech reached the people, and made them listen. It makes you believe what he says because of the way he presents it and it does its job. The speech is a persuasive one to make the population see the charges in a new way and understand what the money in question was used for. He gives them information to change their opinions on the matter which is exactly what a persuasive speech is designed to do. Nixon begins his speech by stating that he will not lie, or deny the charge brought against him without going into specific detail.
This period can be a time of discovery and reflection into what type of adult one wants to become; in this I strongly agree with Zinsser. His position at the college lends to his credibility and allows him behind the scenes insight as to the pressures of college life. According to Zinsser several college Dean’s have noted the change in mindset of students from helping the world, to getting a leg up on their competition.2 I agree that restricting classes to only those applicable to a degree is a disservice to oneself because my experience doing just that and the tremendous stress of the work load confirmed it. The words of William Zinsser urged college students then and now to embrace this journey for what it is, stressful, ever changing, and savor the experience for what it can be, wonderful. Zinsser, William.
If he has a job that calls for him to improve writers’ techniques then he is doing just that with this argument and convincing proposal. He used the very strategies he described in his essay to write this essay, and it worked. His essay made me think of something I never thought of about argumentative writing and considering other’s point of views, reject the claim that the five paragraph (hamburger) essays were not intellectual, and raise questions about how change will come. He must be right because the techniques of having a counterargument, raising questions, and logically persuading a solution was used on his own audience had the very affect he said they would. Every component he believed that should be included in argumentative writing was included in this very essay about it.

It would be a hard situation to explain my decision to my publisher, my readers, and the couple. I would tell my boss my highest loyalty is to him/her and my job. I wanted the best outcome for the newspaper. I would explain the situation to the readers by saying my loyalty is to you and knowing the circumstances of the gay-marriage amendment that’s why I didn’t print the announcement. Finally, the toughest decision of all I would tell the couple what my highest loyalty’s are and that’s how I came to the final

Kashon Taylor Taylor 1 Laura Diaz de Arce College Writing I 27 August 2013 In Response to Gladwell’s Notion In today’s world most everything from keeping in contact with old friend and business trade to major events such as the civil rights movement is worked out by small ties and weak ties. Strong ties are information-carrying connections between people that are used to solve negative or positive issues. Strong ties are, for the most part, are used for more severe problems. Issues such as civil rights movement were resolved by strong ties. This being said, some may believe that weak ties are not as important, although, in their own way, they are just as important as strong ties.
