I watched Fairy Odd Parents. Fairy Odd Parents is a cartoon show about a ten year old boy named Timmy Turner who has fairies. Timmy’s parents are always too busy doing things and they leave Timmy with an evil babysitter called Vicky. Timmy is a nerd and he has two other nerd friends. His nerd friends are called A.J. and Chester, and A.J. is the smartest of them all. I used to watch this show with my son but I never really pay attention to the gender stereotypes in the show. One of the episodes that I watched recently, the family was going on a vocation and like all of the other vocations Timmy’s father always gets lost, but he never admits to it. The family ended up in an island and the father said he is going to build a boat and save his family. The father also said if he doesn’t succeed he will called himself a woman named Linda. I feel like genders are presented in a way that serves to reinforce traditional stereotypes. For example, when Timmy’s father refers to himself as Linda, he puts on lipstick and says Linda broke her nails. Sadly Timmy’s teacher said the exact the same thing and he also calls himself Linda. I can see my son watching this show and doing things he sees in it. For example, he might go to school and socialize with boys only. He might also socialize with people who acts like him and looks like him. I feel like that might limit his learning opportunities and his knowledge about the real world. To stop the bully by becoming a bully does not solve anything. Most bullies might also be bullied at home or may even be physically and verbally abused at home or in the environment they live in. I do not want my son to grow up thinking it is okay to fight violence with violence. Children are learning to make fun of people who are nerds, short and people who generally look different.
