One of the biggest arguments between parents and psychologist is how we discipline our children. Spanking is “corporal punishment and is used to discipline an infant, child or teenager”. Parents usually use open hand to strike the buttocks. In many countries spanking is widely permitted by the local authorities. But in others societies, like in America, spanking is not allowed for the many crimes that have been submitted by the abuse of this form of punishment. There are many reasons why spanking is not the best way to discipline children. One of the main reasons why spanking is an ineffective way to discipline children is that, when the parent spanks their child, the child may become violent as they grow older. Spanking does not always help the child to understand what they did wrong. It is more likely that the kid will do it again because it did not understood why they were spanked. According to Dr. Sears in his article “5 reasons not to hit your child”, he says that spanking can teach children to hit others to make them do what they want. Children whose parents have overused spanking as punishment can become bullies. Parents should use other types of punishments to teach their children values which make them better and less violent. Another reason why spanking is not the best way to correct children is the physical and mental impact. A parent may spank the child in anger, changing the discipline to abuse. They may also use instruments like belts, slippers, or a stick, causing physical damage. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Investigation, it confirms that up to 2,000 children die each year from physical abuse. Parents that apply these severe punishments think that spanking will make the kids to behave better.
