Gattaca shows us that a world based on genes alone is not a world worth living in. Discuss? The film Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccole depicts a Utopian society where the elite the -“valids” – with genetically modified DNA can achieve extraordinary goals, but an “in-valid” is the only one who in fact reaches for the stars. The movie shows that a world based on only genetic perfections and alterations is not a world worth living in. Jerome Morrow and Anton Freeman, who have had their genes modified and are Utopians, end up in failure. However, Vincent, who is conceived naturally without any genetic alterations and is a Dystopian, is a success. Though Anton and Eugene are genetically modified, they lack the qualities of the human spirit, in order to sustain their objectives. Therefore it is not a world worth living in for them. That is the reason why they end up in failure. They did not live up to expectations of a utopian. On the other hand, Vincent achieves success because he has the characteristics of the human spirit and he has the courage and determination to live life. Thus Gattaca shows us that a world based on genes alone is not a world worth living in. Jerome Morrow is a “vitro” birth whose genes are genetically modified but is a failure in life. His genes are selected and manipulated to remove any imperfections and create one of society’s superior humans. Jerome Morrow is a former swimming star who is “second to none”. When he competes in Olympics, he wins only a silver medal. He could not reach for the gold. Despite possessing the superior potential to win a gold medal, he never quite made it. His shortcoming is that he lacks the characteristics of the human spirit such as courage and determination to try harder to reach for a gold medal. Although he has the Utopian physical ability, he does not combine these with the psychological aspect to reach
