History Essay Outline Topic Question 1. To what extent were weaknesses of the French monarchy responsible for the outbreak of revolution in France in 1789? (May 2000) Introduction -Explain the monarchy. King Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette and why the French people hated them... how did King Louis XIV become so hated and why? Which estate hated them the most? Paragraph #1: Social Argument: Propaganda against the Monarchy One of Louis and Marie-Antoinette main goals was to keep the monarchy going. Louis XIV noticed that the monarchy was in danger when he was described very negatively in the papers and also, when his wife, Marie-Antoinette was described very harshly. She was drawn as harpy, an evil, ferocious monster. Of course, that Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette understood that the people of France didn’t like them but they didn’t want to believe in it. That is one of the reasons why they both didn’t try to do anything. One small step could have changed the whole course of the French Revolution. If only, they would have gone and asked the people of France what they need and what they want them to do. The way that they could have done this is by giving fair taxes and giving people the freedom of opinion and speech. (Give examples) Counter Argument: ----- Argument: Louis XIV summoned Estates General because he wanted to slow down the French Revolution. Louis XIV tried to stop the French Revolution but failed because he hasn’t paid much attention to how to rule a country. Louis XIV thought that he understood finance but he didn’t understand them at all. (William Doyle) After some time he realized that he wasn’t going to get anywhere with this, so he changed his plan to staying alive.
