In 1792 France declared war on the Holy Roman Empire Starting the War of the First Coalition. Months later a peace was signed. In 1799 France declared war again to start the War of the Second Coalition. 1801 a treaty was signed. 1804 Francis II starts an anti-French alliance with Russia, a third Coalition war started a year later.

The enlightenment resulted in the idea of using a democracy to govern, the power of the government from the people, natural rights, freedoms, equality and individuality, all aspects that the French people were fighting for. The first incident or revolt that basically began the French Revolution was Bastille Day. On July fourteenth, 1789, there were rumors in the city of Paris that the king was collecting troops to arrest representatives in the city. In the city was a Medieval Fortress named the Bastille, which at the time was being used as a fortress and an armory. The Parisian people proceeded to attack the fortress to possess military supplies and weapons in defense.

Many people were killed and imprisoned, and the clergy had a new set of rules with one including that the priests have to marry. The 19th century nationalists and revolutionaries went back to the year of 1789. The original French revolution came with the rituals, terms, colors, and names. The 20th century revolutionaries look differently at the 19th century revolutionaries.
