What makes someone a hero? In my opinion, just doing the right thing is enough. The theme of the movie The Freedom Writers is exactly that, “I’m not a hero, I just did what was right.” This reminds me of the book, The Wave. In The Freedom Writers none of the characters ever did what was right, all they cared about was their own kind. In the book The Wave Laurie started to figure out what this whole movement was Turing into, so she made the right decision to go against this “cult” by taking the correct actions. The Freedom Writers was an amazing movie. When the lady that hid Anne Frank introduced herself to them, Marcus said to her that she was his hero, she answered by saying, “I’m not a hero I just did what was right.” It showed all of…show more content…
She had realized what was going on, and how it was taking people over. So, she decided to do the right thing. She got out while she could. Then she went on to convince the others that it was acting like a cult. Finally, some of them caught on, to what was happening. Her boyfriend had become so involved with the movement that he assaulted his own girlfriend! That was when it hit him, that Laurie had been right the whole entire time about The Wave. If it wasn’t for Laurie, all of the students would have fallen right into the “group”. If it wasn’t for Laurie realizing what was going on things could have gotten bad fast! As you can see these two pieces have the same theme, which is “I’m not a hero I just did what was right.” The characters have changed so much by this lesson. They have realized they have to take charge, and do the right thing. This theme affects students today almost every day. For example, there are students faced with bullying every day. If a student witnesses someone being bullied, they must decide to either stand up for the person being bullied or ignore the situation.
