The purpose of this lab is to focus on how to make zinc iodide in a different way using compounds instead of elements, which are barium iodide and zinc sulfate. We will see if the reaction between these two compounds will occur and make a prediction by writing a chemical equation. The procedures for this lab are to place a small test tube inside a 50mL beaker and weigh it. Then, using a spatula, add 0.45±0.03 g of zinc sulfate heptahydrate into the small test tube and record the mass. After that, dissolve the sample in 2 mL of deionized water and shake the test tube for 1 to 1 ½ minutes to dissolve the solid.

Absorptivity of Bentonite Clay Final Project CHEM 112-501 Melissa Cisneros* Danielle Salo The purpose of this experiment was to test the absorptivity of Bentonite clay, charcoal, and another type of clay. Bentonite clay as well as charcoal can be used as a means of removing pollutants such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water sources. Materials and Methods: Materials used in this experiment were 600 mL beaker, 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask, 50 mL graduated cylinder, ring stand and clamp, thermometer, hot plate, tongs, pipet, spatula, centrifuge tubes, a centrifuge, cuvettes, and a spectrophotometer. Chemicals used were FeCl3 Anhydrous, FeSO4- 7H2O, Bentonite clay, 2.5 M NaOH solution, and Procion Red MX-5. To make the clay, 250 mL of distilled water was heated in a 600 mL beaker to 70° to be used as a hot water bath for the Erlenmeyer flask.

We are performing the experiment to gain our spots on the team of quality control for the Athenium Baking Soda Company. The purpose of the quality control is to determine the quality and safety of use of the baking soda. The theory behind thermal gravimetric analysis is that when a mixture is heated to a sufficiently high temperature, one component decomposes to form a gaseous compound while the other does not decompose. The mass is measured before and after the heating and stoichiometric ratios are used to determine the percent by mass. Hydrate Lab The purpose of this lab is to analyze the percent water in a crystalline hydrate and to indentify the hydrate from a list of possible unknowns. The solid hydrate will be heated to remove the water, and the percent can be found by measuring the mass of the solid before and after heating. The hydrate will be indentified by comparing the percent water in the hydrate with the percent water calculated for the possible unknown. Before the lab there are pre-lab questions: 1. In investigation two, the objective was to use acetic acid in distilled white vinegar and find the percent composition of it. In the first investigation of the laboratory, it was important to find whether the household items were basic or acidic. To continue through the experiment, a temperature probe and pH electrode was used. It would be classified as a base, if the number given by the probe was higher than seven.
