Statement of the Problem: Concussions are becoming a more common and more serious within football. Studies have shown short-term and long-term symptoms of concussions that effect football players and their performance. Research has been conducted to compare different types of helmets and their design, however in order to better understand the new technology present within football helmets research will need to be conducted using high school and college programs to better understand which helmets they are using within the program and for what reason. Research will need to be conducted through a survey method and reach at least 30 different programs including high school and college programs. Concussions: Terrell (2004) defined concussions as a mild traumatic brain injury and occurs when the mental state of a person has been altered due to a direct or indirect hit to the head or surrounding area including the face or neck. STAR Rating: Rowson & Duma (2011) define the STAR Rating as “the Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk (STAR) equation relates on-field impact exposure to a series of 24 drop tests performed at four impact locations and six impact energy levels.” (p. 2130) Delimitations: This study will be delimited by the following factors: 1. Participants in this study will be delimited to college and high school football programs in the surrounding area. 2. Data will be collected from March 1, 2013 to March 17, 2013 or until enough data has been collected prior to March 17, 2013. Limitations: The study will be limited by the following factors: 1. Football programs may not have a current inventory of football helmets. 2. The program may not have sufficient funds to buy newer up to date technology. 3.
