First Communion At the age of seven a child can have its first holy communion. Communion is a sacrament practiced by the Catholic Church every week so it is a big deal when a child can begin the reception of the sacrament. The child will go through classes, leading up to the event, to learn why they are receiving the Sacrament and the importance of it to the Catholic Church. Traditions surrounding First Communion usually include parties and family gatherings. When the kid receives First Communion he/she is now allowed to practice communion once a week. When receiving Communion you get The Body of Christ, which is a wafer of unleavened bread, and the Blood of Christ, which is red wine. First Communion is a rite of passage to Confirmation, the next Catholic sacrament. In Chapter IV of Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt is preparing for First Communion. He is not excited to receive the Sacrament but the collection, so he can go see James Cagney at the local theater. He receives First Communion but his grandma won’t let him get his collection until he has had his First Communion breakfast. He ends up throwing his breakfast up along with the host from his Communion. Now his grandma wants him to ask the priest how to clean it up in confession.
