Lee Myers SOC 1000-500 Sarah Wolf Fire and Ice I really enjoyed watching these movies who better to learn about humanity from than the Doctor, John Hurt. We see essentially 2 polar opposite environs abundant water and waterless. But in both of these we see humans making the most of their situation and improving and adapting to their environments. Both environments are harsh but offer different benefits requiring different adaptations. I have enjoyed learning and seeing how environments shape our societies and who we are. This is very evident in less developed countries, but still visible in modern society too. Take for example Las Vegas, Nevada. Sometimes having to cross bridges that are no more than a pair of spindly cables strung across dozens of feet of raging water. Or we can look at the Zanska river valley people who travel along rivers of frozen water to bring their children to something that we take for granted often here, school. This journey takes 6 day and has the horrifyingly terrifying name Chadar. Watching the faith of the children in the family that are shown here is heartwarming putting their lives in the hands of their father.(Rivers) But even the developed world and their Postmodern societies, which are preoccupied with consumer goods and media images, have to deal with natures problems.
