This paper will focus on famous British writers during the period of 449-1798. These famous writers have made great contributions to the English literature. You will also learn about their accomplishments and personal life. William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616. During that time, he became the most influential writer in the English language. After he wrote the Sonnet, Shakespeare moved to London and began working as an actor and playwright. Today, the English Sonnet is often referred to as the Shakespearean Sonnet. Another great British writer is John Milton. Milton decided early in life that he wanted to be a writer. Paradise Lost was his crowning achievement. In 1652, he experienced a bad tragedy. His wife died during child birth to their daughter. His son also died and lost his eyesight. Milton dedicated all of his life to family, faith and literature. His life ended in 1674. In 1572, John Donne was born and raised Roman Catholic. But his life was not all easy. He battled poverty after he lost his job and was imprisoned for marrying Sir Thomas Egerton’s 17-year-old niece. When he married, he had 12 children. Two of his children were stillborn, and others died at the ages of 3, 7, and 19. His wife died giving birth. Donne died in 1631. Daniel Defoe, the father of the English novel, was born in London, around 1660. He is best known for Robinson Crusoe, his most famous book Defoe wrote more than 370 works. He experienced a lot when he was a child. When he was five, bubonic plague broke out and a huge fire destroyed part of the city. As a result, Defoe put all his childhood experiences in writing. Alexander Pope was a poet and satirist. He was also known as masterful use of the heroic couplet. Pope was raised Roman Catholic.
