Family Life in Britain A "typical" British family used to consist of a mother, a father and two children. But in recent years there have been many changes in family life. The number of divorces has increased since the law made it easier to get a divorce. That's why 24% of British children live in one-parent families. Life in Britain is an expensive pleasure. That’s why in marriage financial issue takes leading place. Britain couples give birth to a child, only standing firmly on feet. A late child is a common phenomenon. The average British family has only one or two children. Most British children live with their parents until they finish school at the age of 17 or 18. Then many of them go away to college, leaving some parents sad and lonely or enjoying their release from parental responsibilities. But some of them stay with their parents during their college years or return home after graduation. Today's parents can’t be sure that their married children have moved out forever. After a divorce they may return to the parental home temporarily or on a long-term basis. Some aging parents enjoy their freedom and independence and don't want to be a burden to their children. Such useful things as a telephone and the Internet help them to keep in touch with their children on different distances. A car and a public transport help children visit their parents and give possibility of meeting grandchildren with their grandparents.
