The fact that Peter is becoming more Australian further distances him from his father leading to isolation and alienation. The distance growing between them is shown in the metaphor “Further and further south of Hadrian’s Wall”. In the poem Feliks has tried to instil in Peter a sense of cultural belonging but it is impossible for Peter to develop the sense of belonging to a nation, a culture and heritage that is a large aspect of Feliks’s life. This attempt fails as a feeling of belonging cannot be enforced or easily
A strong connection between the father and son in both texts is an evident factor that strongly affects their belonging. This is shown in the text Romulus, My Father where the strong relationship between Raimond and his father greatly influence how happy they are with themselves and how connected they are with each other. This continual connection and attachment they have with each other is shown through the use of symbolism of the motorbike that Romulus lends to Raimond. This motorbike symbolize the strong trust and connection that Romulus and Raimond have throughout the
Abstract There are many different interpersonal relationships one can engage in, of these friendship is the most important as it plays a vital role in shaping our lives. Friendship can be defined as a voluntary, reciprocal relationship with strong positive affective connections which can help achieve personal goals. It can be argued within westernised societies there are common expectations within a friendship such as loyalty, respect, support and reciprocity. This study is concerned with the way friendship is experienced in contemporary Britain. An experiential account from a single case study has been used, based on secondary data from a semi-structured interview.
Romulus ends his life as an accepted local eccentric rather than a stalwart of the community. He is separate from his local community, he is not truly connected in the way his son is and as a result he does not entirely belong, but nor does he belong to Romanian society in reality; he is slightly disconnected from all his places of belonging. Romulus, My Father is an interesting exploration of the importance of connections in forming belonging. While Christine demonstrates the lack of belonging that results from being incapable of connections and the dangerous results of a lack of belonging, Raimond’s story shows the importance of connections in introducing ideas that can induce belonging, and the way connections to the land can develop. Romulus is an interesting example of a man who may be happy even if he is disconnected both from his place of residence and his
chrysalidsBody paragraph 3 Uncle Axel is a good mentor to David because he serves as a good role model to David. He serves as a good role model to David when he inspires David to admire him and follow his footsteps because of the loyalty and respect he shows towards David that others such as leader Joseph Strorm do not. A role model is someone that is admirable because of the qualities they possess and someone you want to follow the footsteps of. Qualities such as loyalty and respect are both key to being a good mentor. A loyal person is someone that can be trusted upon.
This is further emphasized by the symbolic significance of his father’s arms, “I remember his strong, bare, sun-darkened arms on either side of me… the sight of his muscular arms protected me…” Raimond’s relationship with Romulus shapes his sense of self and the world and is revealed in the anaphora of his assertion “I know what a good workman is; I know what an honest man is; I know what friendship is; I know because I remember these things in the person of my father…” By contrast Raimond’s relationship with his mother is characterized as one of “neglect”. Ironically however, whilst his interaction with his mother has the potential to limit his sense of
How does his skill allow him to belong to the community? What does this tell you about what Australians at the time valued and accepted? * It spread all among the community, allowing other farmers to know about him and accept ‘ he was a superb welder and his reputation spread among the farmers in the region’ * Earned him belonging through his work * “ like him, his work was honest through and through” simile, honest to himself and the work that he does * Australian view: earning their reputation, benefits the community * Simple syntax “he was happiest in his workshop, spending little time at Frogmore.” Highlights his humility (gracious, happy with the small things in life) 6. What leads to him giving up his metal work? What insights does this give into his values and character?
“Barriers to cultural experience do not always prevent a sense of belonging” In the text ‘Romulus, my Father’, barriers to cultural experience is a key and integral idea presented throughout the text. At first glance it appears that the Gaita’s personal and cultural contexts create barriers between them and the rest of the Australian community. However at a closer glance we can see that as ironic as it may seem, Romulus Gaita’s experiences and character symbolises him as a figure of not belonging to the majority of society. In turn, this idolises Romulus as a sort of role model for those who don’t belong within a deeper community and as a key member of the intangible group of sophisticated intellectuals. This idea is shown throughout ‘Romulus,
