INTRODUCTION: Throughout life an individual can be influenced by the relationships they have with people. Friendships or familial relationships help to build character. A strong identity can be created due to these relationships. Romulus, My Father a memoir by Raimond Gaita, illustrates how a familial bond between father and son can lead to a feeling of acceptance, ultimately creating a sense of belonging. Not only do familial relationships impact on identity, close friendships can also influence an individual’s sense of belonging. This is shown through the friendship group in the television episode 1, series 1 of Skins, directed by Paul Gay. However an individual with a weak identity can struggle with belonging. Romulus has a strong identity this shows he is able to overcome barriers of not belonging, by settling into Australian rural society. Raimond learns his morals and ethics from his father; “I know what a good workman is, I know what an honest man is, I know what friendship is, I know because I remember these things in the person of my father.” Repetition of “I know” emphasizes the many positive human qualities in which Raimond was influenced by. This shows that his father’s strong sense of who he is has also helped Raimond form his own strong identity. They both share an understanding of positive morals which creates acceptance for Raimond and for his father. This is evident when he is speaking to his school roommate Ackley and removes himself from the situation; “I pulled the old peak of my hunting hat around to the front then pulled it way down over my eyes”. By pulling the hat over his eyes he becomes removed from personal relationship. Having social problems, and not being able to interact with people this hat becomes a symbol that, Caufield disconnects emotionally with people. Identity is strengthened with close personal relationships; this is contrasted with the relationships displayed in the other texts. Caufiled is contrasted with Romulus and Raimond’s close bond, and the connection with the friendship group in Skins.
