Women are very influential. For Montag they help his transformation from a closed-minded man to a radical changing society. In Fahrenheit 451 everyone just plays by the rules, no questions asked. The women help Montag’s change in the novel by making him realize his emotions for others, why he should question the world, and stand up for what he believes in. Human emotions include love and compassion, which is still not simple enough for Montag’s generation. When Montag thought about Mildred dying he knew he would not cry because, “it would be the dying of an unknown, a street face, a newspaper image”(Bradbury, p. 44). Marriage is supposed to be about love, but he doesn’t even know what that is. They are only married because that is what everyone else does. Mildred’s friends have been remarried more than four times. He realizes his love for Mildred was fake. He did not actually understand what it truly was. Not that there was anything exactly to love. But when Clarisse is not there for their daily walk, he felt, “vague stirrings of dis-ease in him”(Bradbury, p.32). He met her about four days ago, while he has known Mildred for over 10 years. He learns that he can loves too and what it really means when he misses Clarisse. When he notices how dumb Mildred and her friends are he becomes determined to break free from the society. Lastly he thinks of what the woman in the fire did to protect the thing she treasured the most, giving him the final push.
