The Dual Effect of Granny’s Jiltings Throughout the story “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” the protagonist, Granny, was jilted several times. The jiltings that Granny, or Ellen, experienced through her life had the dual effect of improving while worsening it. Granny feels jilted several times in her life: she was left at the altar; her husband died young, leaving her to shoulder the burden of being head of household; an incident that the story hints at is the death of her daughter Hapsy while she was giving birth; as well as Granny not getting a sign from God on her deathbed. All these incidents compounded to harden her. Yet, they simultaneously lent her the ability to soldier on through a difficult life.
They wake her up early and help her stretch her legs in hope that they will one day be straight/normal. They showed the compassion that her birth mother would never give to her child. Linda later recalls, “I must have been held so much that the sensation became a part of me”(65). Fifty years later when Linda and her mother Nancy finally meet for dinner, they don’t hug or even shake hands. The mother may be the birth mother and be related by blood but she sure doesn’t show any love toward her handicapped daughter that she abandoned.
Idgie experiences a terrible heartbreak during her young developmental stage. She, along with Ruth witness Buddy’s tragic death. This will forever change Idgie, as she becomes even more rebellious and revolutionary. A example of her mischievous ways was when she can road past the church during a sermon and compared the preacher to a snake. The next stage that greatly influences Idgie’s life is when Ruth is asked to come and stay at Idgie’s home by her mother.

Catherine wants to just get away from the lady life and escape, but is always held in place by her pregnant mother, and her always nagging nurse/maid Morwenna. In Catherine, Called Birdy, many women gave Birdy advice but she never really listenened to them, but when she did, she made a decision that changed her life forever.

Mariam has been lonely her entire life and after her mom committed suicide she couldn’t have been so lonely. “’You can eat downstairs with the rest of us.’ He said, but without much conviction. He understood a little too readily when Mariam said she preferred to eat alone.” (40) Mariam had no family after Nana died, all she had was Jalil, her birthfather who treated her like she was adopted, like a harami.
Orual never feels that she is loved by anyone, that is, until Psyche enters her life after Psyche’s mother dies giving birth to her. Orual takes it upon herself to become Psyche's guardian and to raise her. Orual loves Psyche more than anything, but her love is selfish and very possessive. Orual is tormented by the thought of having to ever give Psyche from her possession and she does everything in her power to prevent it. After first being separated from Psyche then becoming bitter from not seeing the same things as Psyche once reunited, I realized the tragedy was that not only did Orual never found the “love of the Gods,” she also never learned to love her life and accept herself as the person she was.
In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” Granny’s journey towards death grants the reader an understanding of two archetypes: the unhealable wound—George jilting Granny which induces her overwhelming independent nature—and journeying towards death/rebirth—which is Granny’s time spent on her death bed, reflecting on George jilting her. He is the minister of New England and he’s supposed to be living a life that is holy before God and His people. Arthur Dimmesdale had made a huge mistake when he had sexual relations with Hester. It affected not only him but: Hester, Pearl, the townspeople, God, and Roger Chillingworth. Dimmesdale first acts like he didn’t do anything at the first scaffold scene by stating, “I have thought of death, have wished for it, would have even prayed for it, and were fit that such as I should pray for anything.” (Hawthorne 67.) How it affected him had a huge impact.

As Granny Weatherall’s life is fading she sees her life before her eyes and the title all of a sudden makes more sense. She is filled with disappointment due to relationships in her life. She has failed with everything and everyone in her life. She is filled with fear in her last moments, all alone.
