The FBI is constantly evolving and adapting to meet changing times, dynamics of crime, espionage and political terrorism. Currently the FBI is a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice and is responsible to the Attorney General and is also responsible for reporting its findings to federal U.S. attorneys across the country. It provides other states and local law enforcement agencies with cooperative services, fingerprint identification, laboratory examinations, and police training. The mission(4) of the FBI is to coordinate intelligence efforts that drive actions to protect the United States. Their goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the threats and penetrate national and international and transnational networks that have a desire and capability to harm us.
This investigation is important in its historical context because the FBI’s involvement during the Civil Rights Movement can either defend or suspect the actions of civil rights activists and leaders. The FBI’s motivation was to infiltrate information on individuals who were suspected to be involved in crimes associated with communism. Dr. Martin Luther King had been highly suspected of communist relations and was kept under surveillance by the FBI under the director’s, J. Edgar Hoover, orders (Lovegrove, 120). This caused a controversy in believing whether King was a true civil rights activist or if the Bureau was really protecting civil rights. Much of the FBI’s attention was placed on black communities and activist leaders (O’Reilly, 261).

Interested in the general welfare of the citizens of America, he is willing to sacrifice his privileged life in America to protect the rights of privacy for Americans, therefore he is a whistleblower despite the government’s efforts to portray him as a traitor.. Snowden landed a job as a security guard for the NSA, he then switched to the CIA and was stationed in Geneva, but in 2009 he left to work for private contractors Booz Allen Hamilton which was a tech consulting firm. He went to Japan to work as a subcontractor, he was later transferred to Hawaii. Three months into his job in the Oahu office, he began noticing disturbing evidence of government programs that allowed the NSA to spy on American citizens through their phone conversations and internet history. Knowing it would cost him his job and $200,000 salary and much more he began copying and collecting documents secretly while he was at work that contained vast information on the agency’s practices of spying on innocent people.
