My family is small; it is only my father, my boyfriend, and I. When my boyfriend and I return from school we immediately sit on the couch and start watching television with my dad and we never talk about important issues for example chores. Winn talks about how televisions take away families opportunities to discuss important concepts and I think my family models this. I have always wanted to be like the families on television who have a game night, eat dinner at the table, and just enjoy the company of the people around them, but ironically television is one of the main reasons this is not possible. Winn suggests that the only family ritual left is watching television with each other because television has a way of pulling you in and not letting you go.

This changed due to NCAA legislation which moved the games to a brand new battlefield, the football fields of the campuses. Mizzou’s Director of Athletics, Chester L. Brewer, envisioned adding excitement to the rivalry game by inviting alumni to join in and “come home” to see the game. Thousands of people find their way home or discover their future home at Mizzou every year to participate in the annual homecoming rituals. Festivities of the original homecoming in 1911 included a parade, spirit rally and the game against KU. More than 9,000 fans packed into the past football field, Rollins Field (now known as Stankowski Field), and began the Homecoming tradition.
The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast, starting on December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian friends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving in America (thanksgiving services were held in Virginia as early as 1607), it was America’s first Thanksgiving Festival. The writing of the Pilgrims told us that about 141 people attended the three day celebration. Chief Massasoit brought 90 braves and there were about 50 were Pilgrims. Only four of the Pilgrim women were at the feast.

I usually do my schoolwork on my couch with my laptop in front of the TV. Obviously this creates so many distractions and my mind easily veers off and I can’t finish my schoolwork. The last suggestion I would like to try and use is focusing on the important portions of the text. I use this technique in the military and it works out for me, I don’t know why I didn’t use this in schoolwork to begin with. • How might this plan help you accomplish your reading goals?
America has no room for the “summer soldier and the sunshine patriot” (637). Patriotism should be a permanent fixture within our hearts. Although many of America takes off from work on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day, few actually celebrate these days or show the respect these important days deserve. Memorial Day honors our dead who died at war fighting for America’s freedom and Veterans Day honors American Armed Forces. Independence Day is our nation’s birthday and should be celebrated to recognize our country’s beginning.
