Explain using all the available evidence; explain how and why Tollund Man was killed. The evidence provided by various sources suggests that the Tollund Man may have been killed as a sacrifice for a Northern German tribe god named Mother Earth, the Goddess of Spring and growing crops. These sources include written accounts by historian Cornelius Tacitus, the noose that was found around his neck, scientific reports, examinations and x-rays on the body and several other discoveries of bodies preserved in bogs, leading to archaeologists concluding that it was a sacrificial offering from the Iron Age, further providing details on how the Tollund Man may have died. With the details provided from different sources, a more conclusive statement can be stated on how and why the Tollund Man was killed. Firstly, written accounts from Cornelius Tacitus state that the Tollund Man’s death may have been linked to a North German religious tribal custom.
During the hunt the tribal men paid their respect to the slaughtered animal, which they believed to be a living soul, ultimately part of the Mantu. They believed they needed to show gratitude for the animal by respecting the carcass and using it in the most economical way. The Mayans believed that humans and animals were closely related. Another aspect of the Mayan faith that I noticed involved various rituals. Dance was used to bring together and celebrate the hunt.
Many individuals see the "Stone Age" as one big diverse period in history, but in fact the Stone Age is made up of two distinct sub-periods called the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) and the Neolithic (New Stone Age). During the Paleolithic Era, the men and women hunted and gathered their food, but with the discovery of agriculture and domestication of animals, a new way of living was introduced and changed society forever. This introduced the Neolithic Age, and although many ways of living changed, some were still preserved. Religion for instance was a similarity that was carried into the Neolithic society; both eras did burials which indicated a belief in afterlife. Along with that, some aspects of the social organization were the same.
Nature vs. Nurture debate, people could argue that Robert Pickton was born a generally bad human being and that this behavior couldn’t have been prevented. Though nurture, how he was raised and the things that he had to deal with would explain or almost compensate for his actions. He was raised on a farm and grew up around the slaughtering of animals; he knew murder to be a normal thing. Anthropologists were heavily involved in this case though because when they started searching his pig farm and finding human remains, the anthropologists were the ones to organize the excavations and to study the conditions in which they were discovered in. An anthropologist would also be interested in studying the culture of prostitutes and the atmosphere; drugs and alcohol and how these could play a part in
As previously mentioned, the Asmat deal with chaos thanks to the creation of myths, magic, art and rituals. Rituals indeed give them a sense of control, because otherwise they would not know how to deal with things like death. This community believes that a carver of wood once drowned while canoeing, but was brouhgt back to life by an eagle. This man then began carving figures of men and women on trees followed by a symbolic ceremony. This resulted in the figures becoming living men and women.
The Mayans and Incans were very similar culturally. An emperor ruled the civilizations, beneath him was the nobles and priests and following them was the merchants and artisans and at the very bottom were the serfs. Both the Incans and Mayans valued their religion very strongly and they both were polytheistic, meaning they believed in many gods. The people sacrificed human and animal blood in rituals because they believed that their gods were nourished by blood. Agriculture was also a very important role in the Mayan and Incan civilizations.
In turn, he runs the risk of being dismissed from the slaughterhouse and left out of a job. The second reason is that his job is the most integral part of the industrialized killing process because he is essentially the one to start the whole killing process. Aside from being the one to initiate it, he is the one who makes the whole act of industrialized killing a civilized practice. If the cattle were not knocked motionless and unconscious by the knocker, all 121 slaughterhouse workers would be seen as collectively merciless and barbaric since they would have to perform their jobs on a live, squirming and wriggling cow suspended form above. Not to mention, completing the task would be much more challenging and
According to the given information the religious, economic, and political traditions of the Aztecs, best describe their society. Their religion was a unique one in which they were loyal to the gods and their agriculture which was truly innovative. The most prominent feature of the Aztecs is their religious traditions, especially their sacrificial rituals. The Aztec civilization is very religious, such as making an enemy warrior into that of a living god of which they gave the finest royalties to until the end of the year, at which the Aztecs publicly dismembered him. The process in which they sacrifice their victims in their ritual is that they slice open the chest and withdraw the heart and raise it to the sun, then throw into the shrine
In early times Aztecs believed in the sacrificial rights. Aztecs believed that a person who was a sacrificial victim was known to be the “divine dead”. Mexicans also believed a way a person lives, that’s the way a person will die. “Tell me how you die and I will tell you who you are” (DeSpelder and Strickland, 2005). Mexicans decorate graves and death is apart of everyday life in the Mexican culture.
DBQ #1 I know that Han political leaders, such as Tu Shih, believed in helping citizens with labor efforts by implementing new agricultural technology but, Roman political leaders believed in hiring workers for work ethic over skill and believed in constructing paved roads that were high quality to promote trade and expansion. Document 3 states “Tu Shih loved the common people and wished to save their labor. He invented the water powered blowing-engine for casting agricultural implements allowing people to enjoy the benefit in little labor.” This clearly shows that Tu Shih, the governor of Nanyang, believes that by giving agriculturalists tools to help them become more efficient they will like him as a governor even more and create higher quality products because they will have more time to focus on creating goods. This supports my thesis that political leaders in the Han dynasty believed in helping citizens with labor and implementing new agricultural technology because it shows that even the highest in political rankings were producing ways to help everyday laborers and contributing to their economy. Document 6 states that Roman political elite Gaius Gracchus “Was especially anxious about road building, paying attention to utility as well as to that which was beneficial to grace and beauty.” This document says nothing about how workers were treated if they were paid, or even well maintained.
