September 06, 2012 Discourse Communities Just as the times have changed so have the ways in which we communicate with one another. Now and days we can communicate with several people at once in many different ways thanks to the advancements in technology. We can send and read e mails, texts messages, and even update our status on our favorite social networks in seconds. Which makes communicating information with in discourse communities a lot easier. My first discourse community is my fraternity. Our goals are to socialize with diverse organizations and other individuals to establish connections that can be beneficial for the future. Being a Engineering student we all share the goals of attaining and maintaing a high GPA to not only earn our degree and graduate but to also get an internship to learn skills and gain experience that will be used in our future careers. the genres of communication used in this discourse community are textbooks, e-mails, e-books, classes, and blackboard each of these is a necessary media to learn and gather information on material regarding out area of study as well as upcoming opportunities for internships. An example of this is when a guest is disabled or unable to carry out or reach merchandise on their own we can assist them by getting the item for them and carrying the item to their vehicle. Are many genres of communication include radio’s, PDA’s, weekly advertisements, store grid, team meetings, and telephones all these forms of communication help us find and price merchandise quickly and accurately as well as keep in constant communication with other team members in order to provide excellent service accomplish the maximum amount of work possible in a timely manner. The specialized vocabulary used in are safety codes for example “code clear” means that there is a food or chemical spill somewhere in the store. another part of the vocabulary is retail terminology such as “go backs” which are items that were left at registers by guest’s who decided not to purchase them another term used is “Pulls” which is merchandise that is brought out from the back room for restocking the shelves. and abbreviations are used to identify areas of the store (e.g AP office) which stands for Asset Protections
