Topic 7: Engineering Ethics & Professional Conduct 1 What is Engineering? • The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. -- ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, USA) 2 What is an Engineer? • A person whose job is to design or build machines, engines or electrical equipment, or things such as roads, railways or bridges, using scientific principles -- Cambridge English Dictionary 3 What is Professionalism? • The attitude, conduct, standards, and views that characterize a profession or a professional person (Arazi, et. al.) • An engineer exhibits professionalism when he possess the following characteristics: – – – – Specialized engineering knowledge and skills Honest and impartial in performing jobs Have constant interest in improving the profession Support societies that represent the engineering profession (Source: Eide et. al.) 4 Why is Engineering Different? • Bachelors degree is the required training • Engineers don’t always interact directly with the end consumer • Decisions made by a single engineer can effect multiple individuals • No single standard of education (e.g. chemical vs. electrical vs. biomedical vs. civil) 5 Laws, Morals, and Ethics • Law - a binding custom or practice of a community : a rule of conduct or action prescribed or formally recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority. -- Merriam Webster Dictionary – – – – Set by a recognized authority Includes specific penalties for non-compliance Based on applied morals specific to a society Specific society definitions of what is legal and what isn’t 6 Laws, Morals, and Ethics • Moral – Of or relating to principles of
