Mrs. Dubose and most of the towns people dislike the Finches because Atticus is a white man defending a black man. Jem and Scout stats to become aware that all this is caused by segregation.
Prejudice is Everywhere “There’s nothing more sickening to me than a low-grade white man who’ll take advantage of a Negro’s ignorance” (Lee 221). Atticus, the narrator’s father in To Kill a Mockingbird, expresses his disgust in the manner of how white men treat the African-American race. This part of the novel is only one example of the prejudices observed in To Kill a Mockingbird, as the novel highlights the issue throughout. Racism was a major issue a large number of men, women, and even children had to face during the time periods of the novels To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Scout, the protagonist of To Kill a Mockingbird, is a young girl living in Maycomb, Alabama.
The lack of knowledge in Maycomb about the outside world and their opinions about black people ingrains ‘Maycomb’s usual disease’ into their minds as they have no other opinions about black people. A prejudiced society is usually ignorant of its flaws, many prejudiced people do not realise the extent of their hypocrisy. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), Scout and Jem encounter prejudice in their little southern town of Maycomb, in which many social divisions exist. Maycomb County harbours many kinds of prejudices, and this lack of acceptance negatively affects many characters, which are stereotyped based on their race, economic status and level of education. Firstly, the 1930’s have large amounts of racial tension between strangers, neighbour, and even fellow family members. The white community feels that the black people are beneath them in the world.
Lee’s “To kill a mockingbird” is simply about the racial issue during the1930s. It is a portrayal of the racism and oppression black people suffered through and still suffer from in modern times. The story is narrated from Jean Louise Finch also referred as “scout” eyes about the trial of a black man called Tom Robinson accused for raping and beating the white poor Mayella Ewell. Even though Robinson is defended by scouts father Atticus Finch whom is the most respected and professional lawyer in Maycomb, Robinson is still sent to the chair. As a lawyer, Atticus Finch is a role model for the modern justice system.
The Montgomery Advertiser is also trying to mock how Atticus is toiling away to represent a defendant, Tom Robinson, who has little to no hope in being freed from the accusations of rape made on him. This is not only an extremely rude gesture, but it is also a sign of prejudice, because they are basing their inferences of the future of the case simply on the fact that Tom Robinson is a Negro, and Negroes are always “the bad guys.” Another case where unjustness is shown is when Lula is spiteful towards Calpurnia for bringing Scout and Jem along to the Negro church. Lula says, “‘I wants to know why you bringin’ white chillun to nigger church’” (Lee 119). Prejudice does not occur only when a white person looks down upon a black person; it happens vice versa as well. Black people may not be allowed to attend the same churches as white people, but that does not mean white people prohibited from black people’s churches simply cancels out the act of prejudice.
They discriminate against blacks, mulattos, the poor, and people they do not even know any information about. Blacks encountered most of the discrimination, by the people of Maycomb. Tom Robinson is a black man that is accused of raping a poor girl names Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch the father of Scout and
Bob Ewell, who is above Tom in the social standard, accuses Tom of the rape just because he is black. Bob makes these accusations without any evidence. Atticus defends Tom Robinson because believes he is innocent. Atticus doesn’t see color and teaches his children this strong moral value. The townspeople respond by calling Atticus a “****** lover.” Mrs. Dubose, an old racist woman, shows disrespect towards Atticus and his children.
The story is shown through the eyes of Scout and Jem Fintch who are both growing up with the debate that involves her fathers Atticus Fitches lawsuit. Her father is a white man defending a black man by the name of Tom Robinson who is accused of raping a white girl. Racism plays a huge factor on the lives of these characters living in the town of Maycome. For the African Americans living in Maycome county it was much different then the whites. Black and whites were completely segregated.
