Outline Thesis: In The Scarlet Ibis and The Flowers, the prevalent thematic topic of maturation, which develops the work as a whole by aging the characters, and buiding them in an upwards climax throughout the work. a. Withing the scarlet Ibis, the events that force their maturation develop the book. i. In a court case, a black man named Tom Robinson was ruled guilty by an extremely racist jury. He was obviously (due to the evidence) innocent, but racist southerners of the jury ruled him guilty anyways. ii. Due to the support of Tom Robinson, the common person hated the finch family. 1. Both examples show how prejudiced the city in the South actually was. b. Depression happening at the time as well. j. Both examples show how prejudiced the city in the South actually was. I. The people of Maycomb reveal the racial discrimination of the Great Depression era South. a. Tom Robinson was shot 17 times and killed, and Bob Ewell almost killed Scout and Jem on Halloween. i. Tom wasn’t only shot 17 times, he was also unjustly ruled guilty before that. Racist southerners were the root in both incidents. ii. Bob Ewell attacked the kids, with a knife, and eve broke one of their arms. The kids had done nothing wrong to him, but he felt prejudice towards them due to the actions of their father. 1. Tom was shot solely by average southern Maycomb men who had never met him before. 2. Bob Ewell projected his hatred of Tom Robinson onto the Finch family
