Introduction Nursing concept is a board spectrum in nursing. As we explore the use core concept of theories we found it provides a perspective from which to define nursing. Nursing theory provides the direction and knowledge for nurse to use in their daily practice. If it wasn’t for theory we would not be able to provide the quality of care and safety factors associated with care for our patients. The safety of our patients is our number one priority when giving medical care.
Many nursing theorist have devised a different way of approaching patient care by defining the meaning of each part of the nursing metaparadigm: the nurse, the environment, the patient, and health. Nightingale’s philosophy is environmentally oriented. The focus is to keep the patient dry and clean at all times, to maintain the noise level in the room and surrounding area, and to keep the patient in ventilated room. Although Nightingale’s model seems linear, it has been observed that the nurse initiates mutuality of care as well as the outcome between the nurse and the patient (Selanders, 1998, p. 24). Betty Neuman’s theory of wellness has a holistic approach to the patient.
Explain the functional differences between a regulatory agency and a professional nursing organization as it pertains to your professional nursing practice. The state board of nursing responsibilities are to insure that the licensee is practicing under his/her scope of practice. They also maintain the responsibility to allow the obtaining, retention or revocation any license. A professional nursing organization such as Washington State Nurses Association is responsible for advocating for nursing in the state of Washington. Discuss two examples of how provisions from a nursing code of ethics Influence your practice.
2009). In order to guide their patients to health, nurses must be able change medical lingo into everyday language. For example; instead of asking a patient if they have ‘voided’, he or she should be asking their client if they have passed urine. In most cases, finding the appropriate language to get the message across can be easily predicted. However, in some cases, Nurses have to re-ask a question in order to allow an understanding between them and the patient.
Feb 2013 intake The role of the Nurse in Health Care This essay will give an insight into the role of a nurse in an ever changing profession and society. It will high light certain qualities required for nursing and focus on the importance of ‘Patient centred care’. Nurses require the ability to work autonomously and as a team member to deliver care to a variety of individuals, in a variety of settings. A nurse’s role is to support individuals to live as independently as possible, to prevent illness, to care for the sick and when death is inevitable, to support and improve quality of life till the end. It is also the nurse’s responsibility to act as an advocate for her patient, to provide a safe environment and to safe guard the patient.
The ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice is another crucial manuscript for professional nurses. It defines standards of practice and standards of professional performance. Breaching those, responsibilities are referred to as negligence and malpractice, which will result in legal repercussions or implications. According to Blais, Hayes, Kozier, and Erb (2011),”Negligence or malpractice of nurses can be established when (1) the nurse (defendant) owed a duty to the client, (2) the nurse failed to carry out that duty, (3) the client (plaintiff) was injured, and (4) the client’s injury was caused by the nurse’s failure to carry out that duty. When a client is injured or involved in an unusual incident, the nurse’s first responsibility is to take steps to protect the client and then to notify appropriate agency personnel” (p. 93).
Leadership and management in nursing are very important, which indirectly affect the quality of health care provided to patients. Donner and Wheeler (2004) stated that, leadership and management are believed to be required at all levels of the organization to provide staff alignment, learning and professional development, which can help in optimizing the patient's positive. In other words without both parties everything can be failure. Prosperity in health care can lead to optimal patient outcomes through the provision of employee organizations, which in turn achieve the vision and mission set by the organization. To describe what are management and leadership, Kolter (1990), describes that management is to prevent chaos through structured policies and monitoring, beside that it is to provide clear goals and direction to allow others to achieve their policies, objectives, vision and mission.
People trust and depend on nurses, and I will have the ability to win their trust and become their healer. My main focus will be caring for people, I agree with Nightingale’s theory of nursing; she focused on caring and helping people coping with their environment and situation (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2011, p. 44). Also, I highly agree with Peplau’s theory, this theory emphasizes the importance of patient and nurse interpersonal relationship and determines its importance for caring patient (Potter et al., 2011, p. 44). These two theory guides me to achieve my values and belief towards nursing which are altruism which is a act of selfless care and developing strong bond between my patient and me helps my patients become dependable and make me accountable and responsible towards them. My definition of nursing has not changed; it is basically caring for people and being able to connect
(ANA, 2010, p. 47). This standard implies that ethical rules should be followed. The fact that the patient had an advance directive and that Mr. Y was appointed the POA should have been disclosed. I should have spoken up and mentioned the advance directive when I spoke with Mr. Y. I also should have prevented Dr. K from openly discussing the case with other people in the room. Although this standard implies that family members should be considered a part of the health care team, HIPAA rules and regulations need to be followed as well.
