These laws include man’s right to freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. John Locke was an English philosopher who became one of the most influential thinkers during the Enlightenment. One of Locke’s beliefs was the equality of all men and the elimination of social hierarchy. In his book The Second Treatise on Civil Government Locke states, “There is nothing more evident, than that creatures of the same species and rank … should also be equal one amongst another without subordination or subjection” (Doc A). Locke argues that all men are of the same species making them all equal and placed on the same rank.
Background Information The Court cited the Tinker case and ruled that there was no evidence that reasonably showed substantial disruption or material interference with school activities if students were allowed unfettered access to the books. Schools may not restrict access to the books based on the ideas expressed, whether religious or secular. The Court wrote that even a minimal loss of First Amendment rights is injurious. Requiring parental permission for certain books can cause a “stigmatization” of children who choose to read the books (seen as “bad books”). The Harry Potter books were returned to unrestricted shelves in school library.
The Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776 was when the birth of the United States of America was established into a free country, and set free from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson who is the most credited for the writing of the document, John Locke developed his own theory that all men are “certain unalienable Rights, the among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”. Locke, who was one of idea people who helped Jefferson the main writer, put everything together. The ideas from John Locke, and other pointers he put into the document set ways on how to run a government, and how that today’s government is run by “him”. All in all the Declaration of Independence is the foundation, and the birth of the United States.
The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Declaration of the Rights of Women basically guaranteed religious freedom, the freedom of speech and the press, and personal security, It said that people have natural and inalienable rights (liberty, property, personal security, and resistance to oppression), and every man is presumed innocent until he is proved guilty. The interests of the bourgeoisie influenced the Declaration also, as the
A free society is a civilization where people shall have the right to exercise unlimited freedom in their own lives, freedom to live in whatever manner they choose, freedom to pursue their own goals, as long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal rights of others to do the same. Government's only role is to secure each individual's rights, as Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence. “I took an oath to God that my mission in life is to strive to attain a free society.” A free society is an organized group of individuals who are free to pursue his/her rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A free society needs a limited government. The government must perform three basic functions: the police, to protect individuals from domestic criminals; the military, to protect individuals from foreign threats; and a court system, to enable individuals to settle disputes without resorting to force.
No Common Sense in Gun Control Stephen L. Kono Park University First Year Writing Seminar II: Academic Research and Writing EN 106 Mrs. Regina C. Muir October 11, 2013 Abstract Gun control advocates insist that increased gun control will lower the soaring crime rates of the early 70's. Gun violence is a big problem in the United States and should be reduced. Gun Control Act of 1968, did very little to lower the number of crimes committed by the use of firearms. Gun control in American history started back in 1775 and was the precursor to the American Revolution and our constitutional rights. One of the major points against gun control is the violation of your second amendment rights, you have the right to keep and bear arms for personal protection.
Armed Security in Schools “Why ban one and not the other? And once you start banning semiautomatics, where do you stop?” (Milloy) Society believes the ban of guns is going to stop the violence in America, while most people don’t realize that by banning firearms, we as a society will only increase the power of the criminal over law abiding citizens. The man at the Sandy Hook Elementary School could have been avoid by many ways such as the mother not owning a gun knowing her son had a mental illness, or keeping a tighter lock on the gun in a safe that only she would have access too, finally one of the best ideas to be suggested is the proposal of having armed security guards in school. I believe that we should have armed security in our schools to protect our children by having an armed security as deterrents, President Children get secret service agents yet our children have nothing, finally properly trained and certified school staff to carry firearm. Having an armed security guard or peace officers at our school alone will act as a deterrent towards violent criminals from thinking about going to the school and committing a shooting.
One train of thought suggests that our government should have limited terms to inject new blood into the government. The other train of thought suggests that experienced politicians know how to move political processes forward and limiting their time in office limits this ability. Our government was established by free thinkers that wanted to break away from the tyrannical structure of England. To ensure that our nation does not fall into the same structure, limitations were placed on government positions but not on the overall length of time an official can hold an office overall other than our presidency. This was established to ensure that our representatives could be renewed as often as needed to reflect the public’s beliefs.
Music Censorship in America In a country specifically known worldwide for its opportunity and embrace of freedom, it is ironic that the degree of censorship is as prevalent as it remains to be. This is especially true concerning musical expression, and specifically the genres of rock and roll and rap music. The United States Government is supposed to be the voice of its citizens, but concerning censorship and specifically the censorship of popular music, there can be a discord between the government and the people it represents and serves. First Amendment rights and responsibilities One of the principles of our constitution on which America was founded was that every individual has unalienable rights, and one of the most important rights is our freedom of speech. Amanda Reid (2012) states the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights
Censorship is strictly review by an authority of any material before publication or dissemination, with legal right to prevent, alter, or delay its appearance. Censorship for authors is that they have to face what people believe that certain of their books contains material that is objectionable on political, moral, or religious grounds and should be banned from classrooms in order to protect their children from exposures to allegedly harmful ideas. Most school boards have responded by physically removing books that are written by some author from school library shelves (“Censorship”). J.K. Rowling is well-known for her book, Harry Potter, which has been censor and banned by school libraries. As a child, Rowling enjoyed reading and writing about fantasy stories to her little sister.
