Abusive Head Trauma Giving birth to a child is usually one of the most precious times in person’s life. You bring that baby home loving and caring for it, as you watch him/her change day by day. As a new parent you cannot imagine how life would be without this new love of your life. Most parents would lay down their own life in order to save their child’s. Imagine getting up one morning and running through your daily routine. As you get ready to leave for work, you kiss your two month old son and husband goodbye. The day goes by slow and every minute until five o’clock seems like eternity. Finally you rush home only to walk into a scene that will forever change your life. One being, they will take the baby in to get professional help, but get nervous about anyone knowing the baby was shaken so they will lie to say the baby fell off of something or has been sick prior to finding the baby. These are what doctors call “silent injuries.” ("ABT/SBS," 2011). Several other cases have been misdiagnosed due to the vomiting, drowsiness, irritability, and even seizures with thoughts they symptoms are just related to underlying causes of a virus. In other cases, the panic of someone finding out the baby was shaken still sets in and the parent/caregiver will ignore the fact the baby needs professional help. The baby at this point will usually suffer and in most cases die at home. The prognosis for Abusive Head Trauma victims is more often than not poor. Statistics show that approximately 25% of the victims of Abusive Head Trauma end up in fatalities and the majority of the remaining suffer lifelong handicaps (Perlstein, n.d.). The handicaps that can occur can range from mild learning disorders and behavioral changes to more moderate and severe cases of mental developmental retardations, paralysis, blindness, and inability to eat or exist in a permanent vegetative state.
