Reading is the key to success! After reading the first three chapters in “Engage College Reading” by Ivan G. Dole & Leslie Taggart, I now have different ways to comprehend the text that I am reading. In human biology, it is required to read and fully understand the information you are reading. Before the tips, which “Engage” offers, I would read but I was not retaining all of the reading. However, after implementing a few of their techniques such as annotating, asking questions (mentally) that pertain to the reading and using acronyms. I’ve seen a drastic difference in my reading comprehension as well as retention. Also, it is worth mentioning that my reading speed has exponentially increased. One thing I found to be helpful was that I should ask some questions about what I thinks the reading pertains. For example, if the chapter I am reading is about the heart. I can infer that I am going to learn about the specific functions of the heart. Additionally, I might learn about possible medication to treat certain heart diseases. Lastly, I’ll get a good base on the pathology of the heart. As I read the chapter, I should have used the margin to take key points in each paragraph. Those key points will refresh my memory when going back to review. Subsequently, I would use a highlighter to organize the different subtopics of the reading by color. Color coating is a personal preference however, it makes the text easier to understand because each color illustrates a different section of the chapter. In human biology chapter eight describes the heart and blood vessels. Being able to highlight the heart which has four chambers and four valves. “Taking a closer look at the detail of the structure of the heart, we see that it consists of four separate chambers. The two chambers on the top are the atria, and the two chambers on the bottom are the ventricles. The septum separates the left and right side on the heart”. (Michael D. Johnson, 2010 pg.73). Techniques such as annotating, asking questions that pertain to the reading and using acronyms can be used to aid myself when reading. Techniques should not be hindering me to read. Especially since there is a lot of reading, having the ability to color coat my reading can be extremely beneficial especially when reviewing before an exam. However, If I do not implement any techniques the only person I am hurting is myself. The “Engage College Reading” text book is giving me tools so I can be successful throughout my college
