Energy Drinks “An energy drink is a soft drink containing ingredients designed to boost the drinker's energy, especially after exercise”(dictionary.reference). Energy drinks can be considered as a popular form of soda among teenagers and adults that deliver an energy boost to those who need to be “woken up” in the morning or who are just feeling a little tired during the day. But these drinks, which are supposed to provide you with a boost of energy, can have bad effects on your body. Energy drinks can cause lots of damage on your body as they can contain up to 360mg of caffeine. This caffeine is mostly found in guarana (present in most energy drinks), which has guaranine molecules. It is possible to overdose on caffeine or guaranine from energy drinks. “Guaranine is a molecule that: • quickens perceptions • delays sleep • helps with endurance based activities • can help to recover from a hangover • impairs the appetite • will lead to more frequent visits to the toilet • causes a higher blood pressure and an increased heart rate • is chemically identical to caffeine • can make you feel jittery and may prevent sleep at all ” ("Facts and Fiction") The effects of guaranine are the same as caffeine as they are chemically identical; the only difference is that guaranine has been extracted from guarana seeds. What most heavy energy drink drinkers don’t know is that in the end they end up losing energy as their pancreas produces too much insulin to absorb the sugar. The reason for this is that guaranine slows down the absorption of sugar by insulin which forces the body to produce more insulin and absorb extra sugars which had been consumed earlier. This can cause excessive tiredness and change in the mood. Another ingredient present in energy drink is taurine.
