Anthony Murphree Mrs.Hartman Period 6 2/20/13 End Electoral Vote System The Electoral College system is no longer useful in today’s society and needs to be removed from the presidential voting system. When it was first created it was used because the framers did not have anything better to put in its place at the time. The Electoral College does not even do what it was originally intended to do (Encourage candidates to take small states seriously). It is also only used in the most important election, it was removed other elections because it was felt that the system was unfair. The Electoral College system is faulty and needs to be removed from the presidential voting system. “When they [the founding fathers] met in 1787 in Philadelphia, they were uncertain about how to pick a president. At the end of the summer, they arrived at a compromise – something of the best of the worst options; The Electoral College” (Watson n.p.). The founding fathers picked the Electoral College not because they liked the idea of it but because they could not think of a better option. The Electoral College system used for picking the President was not chosen as a primary topic in the constitution, as for instance the right to freedom of speech was, instead it was used for lack of a better solution. “ We need a National Popular Vote to determine the President of the United States, just like a district-wide popular vote determines the winner of a Congressional seat, just like a state wide popular vote determines the winner of the race for Senate or Governor. No country in the world uses a system as byzantine as the Electoral College , and indeed no constituency inside the United States uses something so daft” (Dayen n.p.) The Presidential Election is the only election that uses this system. I feel that there is no reason for using the Electoral College to be used. We as a country do
