The Articles of Confederation wasn’t working for the fifty-five individuals at the Constitutional Convention on May of 1787 in Philadelphia. Under the articles, there was no chief executive, court system, or a way to force the states to pay taxes. For Madison and his delegates, they were challenged by having to write a Constitution that was strong enough to hold the people and states together without letting one person or group, branch, or level of government gain to much control. The Frankfurt Parliament was established to create freedom of press, German citizenship for all, fair taxation, equality of political rights and to create a unified Germany. However, countries like Austria greatly opposed it. Frederick William IV could be seen as responsible for the failure of the Frankfurt Parliament because he refused to accept any form of leadership and made it clear he distrusted the ‘gentlemen of Frankfurt’. However, many other factors played a role in the demise of the Parliament such as the fact that they were ill-organised, the lack of popular support and their inability to enforce decisions.

The Articles of Confederation established America’s first national government but it was a weak one because it was a free government. This became apparent after Shay’s Rebellion; the government couldn’t regulate the economy or apply a foreign policy. We needed to change the Articles of Confederation thus a meeting was called to the Annapolis Convention. There were plenty of arguments over what to add or take out so some delegates came up with the idea to abandon the Articles of Confederation and establish a new constitution.
Meanwhile, Anti-Federalist believed power should remain with the states. The main reason they revoked the constitution is bad is because it divided the powers amount the government in 3 branches (Judicial, Legislation, Executive), so NO ONE had supreme power over. Anti-Federalist didn’t approved they wanted a bill of right instead.
The government shutdown should not have happened, but because of Congress unable to agree on a budget the government was shut down on October 1st. The Republican Party would not pass a budget in an effort to defund or delay the start of Obamacare. Neither party should have used the budget as a leveraging tool for their political agendas. The government shutdown put many military families in unnecessary stressful situations explained in the paper. When the government has a disagreement is should never affect the soldiers who fight to protect the country.
The main weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation are that it legislated for states but not for individuals. Congress had no power to tax or regulate trade. It lacked power to control commerce. And it was too difficult to change any of the articles. Then the Constitution was put into place 1787 to overthrow the Articles of Confederation.
From 1781 to 1789, the Articles of Confederation did not provide the United States with an effective government. The purpose of the Articles of Confederation was to try to limit the power of the central government and eliminate the chance that the federal government could become too strong. However, the Articles of Confederation created a national government that could not effectively run the government largely due to lack of power given to Congress to regulate trade, levy taxes and ineffectiveness of foreign policy. The Articles of Confederation did not give Congress power to effectively regulate trade. The statistics on the chart included show the United States population increased from 1784 to 1789, but the market value of exports to Great Britain did not increase in comparison to this population growth (Doc B).

Who ever said that the United States was a democracy lied and the Electoral College is great proof. “The first principle of democracy is that all citizens, not invested with the power to govern, have equal access to power and the second is that all citizens enjoy legitimized freedoms and liberties”( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy, paragraph 2, line 2). By following the Electoral College, we as citizens relinquish our voice, we are letting someone else speak for us, and they only speak when it counts. Most of the time the decisions that these "presidential electors" make don't reflect our own. In reality, at the end of the election, the popular vote which can easy be labeled as what the citizens want doesn’t count.
So the tug-of-war between the president and Congress is a special part (271). The framers had never envisioned that the presidency of the United States of America would become such a democratic office. They were afraid of tyranny and the pressure of the public opinion and made the Electoral College in a way that its members would be chosen in a manner decided by the state legislatures (270). They realized that the instead of letting the people elect the members, the state legislatures would elect the members by themselves. The electors from the states would than elect the country’s president from the leading citizens.
