The lawsuit is trying to get Starbucks to adjust their policies in order to not discriminate against people with disabilities. In my opinions people in America have begun to lessen their prejudices against race because there are now so many multiracial families. However, people with disabilities are still hugely discriminated against. Accommodating Elsa Sallard with a stool would have been an easy request to grant. Because this is something the company or that particular district had never experienced it seems they were unfamiliar with how the employee might be able to accomplish her job while using a stool.
The employees may feel a certain way about the layoff of the co-workers and also it may effect how they work. Also another thing is the loss of valuable and knowledgeable employees may affect others too. The new hire people will have no one to ask if they do not understand or know how to perform a task asked of them. This can cause serious problems for productivity and for the patients at the clinic. The last disadvantage I think will be a problem to the Dodge Clinic is employees seeking employment elsewhere because they do not feel there job is secure.
Assess the influence of a recent national policy initiative promoting anti-discriminatory practice (M2) In this assignment, I am going to assess the influences of a recent national policy which promotes anti-discriminatory practice. There are several national policies and legislations in place to make sure that individual’s are not discriminated against due to their circumstances. One of these is the Age Discrimination Act 2006. Age discrimination, or ‘ageism’, is defined by personnel today as “any prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of age”. When we talk of age discrimination in a work place, this is generally where someone has missed out on the opportunity to get a job on the grounds of their age, whether they are thought of as too old or too young.
Some example of discrimination are, sex, religion, gender, color, and sexual harassment (Bennett-Alexander, Hartman 2007). Discrimination is an unfortunate reality within the workplace in the United State, and title VII and its amendments will help deter the employers from this action. Without title VII employers would be taking advantage of their employees by only hiring who they feel are capable of doing the job whether they can or not, or if they have the qualifications or not. Companies have the right to hire the most qualified person for the job, as long as they are not knowingly discriminating against the person. Other forms of discrimination that happen most often within the workplace are age and disability discrimination, these are also protected under title VII and it amendments, for example, there is age discrimination in employment act (ADEA) and the American with disability act
Potential employers could also deny a disabled applicant a position based on not being able to accommodate their disability. With the ADA, employers are responsible for providing reasonable accommodations to a qualified applicant in order for them to properly perform their job responsibilities (The ADA: Your Employment Rights as an Individual With a Disability, 2005). These accommodations include making the work environment handicap accessible. Although many strides have been made for fair treatment of individuals with disabilities there remain many obstacles. One of these obstacles is the current unemployment rates in the United States.
• If you allow your own preferences to dominate your work with people, you fail to perform to the standards set by the UK regulating bodies, they require workers to respect and promote people’s individual views and wishes. • To make the right response when there is a clash between your views and those of the people you are working for, you have to identify and understand your own views and values. • Lots of people are better suited to working for themselves which isn’t always about an inability to follow orders; it can be for many reasons exclusive per company/boss. • Own Values: you may be working shifts you don’t like, and not be able to do anything about it, events like these will lead to disagreements with how your boss sees’s things and how work is
Abstract Ex-offenders face hurdles when trying to find employment after their incarceration or even a felony conviction. Barriers facing ex-offenders in gaining employment can be prejudiced against ex-offenders when trying to further their education, hard and soft skills that ex-offenders may lack when trying to find employment, and the attitudes that affect how employers decide who they will employ. Employers have to look at a person’s past to decide if they are willing to take a chance on that person’s future. Ex-offenders’ willingness to find opportunities for employment is explored as well as the role of background checks and the implications they have for the hiring process. Employers have many concerns when deciding whether to hire ex-offenders, such as their responsibility to protect the company and its employees.
Some of the reasons diversity training does not work well in organizations are outlined below. If your organization's initiative did not do as well as you expected, assess whether your training was affected by any of the following: Poor Timing. The training may have come at a time when employees were preoccupied with more urgent priorities. Stress, because of downsizing and the accompanying fear of job loss, increased workload, or a specific conflict or negotiation with a union might have been much more critical. During such periods, staff is usually functioning at the survival level on Maslow's hierarchy and diversity may not even be a blip on their radar screen, hence their irritation that time and resources are taken up with training.
The role of unions allow members to negotiate for better wages and benefits but dissenters would argued that unions tend to use their collective bargaining to push for wages and benefits that are too excessive leaving no room for flexibility, which often leads to a dead halt in where both the employer and union members are not satisfied with the outcome. An article in American Thinker reported that some unionized
Addressing the mental health problem at the federal, state and local level is also the key to solving this problem, putting Americans in the street that have any type of mental health issues is un-American. Additionally, employers need to change the stigma of negativity concerning hiring practices, especially for those who were incarcerated. With the elderly population living longer and contributing to this problem it is no quick or easy fixes; however, the government needs to do whatever it takes to get people off the street and into housing. Education is also a very important aspect to fixing this problem if people are educated they can get a better job. Although it may be true that some people may contribute to their own demise, there are still a record number of people who legitimately need help.
