Employer’s Perception about Disability and Work Accommodations September 18, 2011 Abstract This paper will aim to understand and discuss some of the underlying reasons why it is hard for people with disabilities to get and retain jobs. This paper will specifically look at employer’s attitudes and perceptions about hiring people with disabilities and how these perceptions are affecting their employment rate. It will also aim to break down these negative hiring stereotypes and barriers by offering some positive feedback on the implications of hiring people with disabilities. Despite people with disabilities being protected and covered by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), employment rates seemed to have significantly decreased. This paper will discuss several reasons for this phenomenon based on employer concerns and perceived perceptions of disability. Introduction The goal of this paper is to analyze the complexities of hiring people with disabilities and explore the reasoning why employers do not feel incline to hire people with disabilities. A brief review of the literature on hiring individuals with disabilities will be presented as well as the motives behind work place discrimination for people with disabilities. The paper will also explore employer concerns about hiring individuals with disabilities and how this affects job placement through vocational rehabilitation. The goal of vocational rehabilitation is to help people with disabilities to get and retain meaningful jobs but with employer’s lack of knowledge about hiring individuals with disabilities and lack of knowledge about workplace accommodations, vocational rehabilitation counselors are finding it harder and harder to place individuals with disabilities.
