Effects of Technology on the Accounting Profession Jake Downs ACC/340 February 14, 2014 Joyce Williams Effects of Technology on the Accounting Profession Technology is always changing and evolving while affecting people in a good way it also brought significant changes to the accounting profession. Some of the most obvious and major technologies that affect the accounting process are (Shanker, 2014): * Equipment (Computers, Phones, Printers, Faxes, Etc.) * Software * Internet * Security * Education The rest of this paper will go into detail of how the changes in information systems and technology has not only affected the accounting profession but changed to accuracy and efficiency in accounting and other tasks of an organization. Technology has also made it possible to set a standard across the board for all organizations to follow. Technologies and their effects on Accounting Processes Equipment was one of the first technologies that were able to make the greatest effect on the accounting process. Having computers now in the process made it so that organizations could eliminate a lot of paper and pencil work and minimize the manual calculations that had to be made. Other types of equipment like cell phones and PDA’s have made it easier for an organization to communicate with clients and associates in this fast paced world we live in. Software goes right along with equipment. Without the equipment, we could not use the amazing software that is out there making the profession so much more efficient and accurate. Spreadsheets and programs like Excel are great with being effective on quick calculations and reporting for an organization.
