The consequences of groupthink are rampant in Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery”. In, “The Lottery”, Jackson presents many symbolic messages and themes that illustrate what happens when a society succumbs to groupthink in order to warn us of the dangers of not being our own critical thinkers and idly accepting things at face-value. The setting of “The Lottery” takes place on a warm and sunny day on June 27th. “The flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green” (Jackson). Every year during this time the residents of the village participate in a lottery.

Three nights a week my mom, sisters and I would attend rehearsals for our spring or winter production. I loved practicing for each production whether I was the lead or a member of the chorus. I knew all of my hard work would pay off when I stepped onto the stage at the Imperial Theatre and my stomach would fill with that familiar excitement. This theatre group and particularly my time spent
After returning to Miami, my next 24 hours would be spent saying goodbye to all of my loved ones. My house is always used for entertaining guests so it is a no brainer that I would then proceed to have a party. The party would begin in the late afternoon around 5pm to celebrate my life and all of the pleasurable moments I have shared with those that have a special place in my heart. I would have a disco ball, strobe lights, balloons of all colors of the rainbow, a buffet of Haitian and Chinese food since they are my favorite, a dj, and a 3 tiered cake in order to thank everyone for being in my life whether it was all of it or just a short amount of time. The party would have no time limit, and would end only when the last person left my

I got to dress up, get my face painted, and hang out with kids for four hours. During the hours that I was doing my community service I got to paint characters, designs, and special things on kid’s faces, hands, or arms that went along with their costumes for Halloween. As the kids went around from trunk to trunk, they would stop at my trunk and get a face painting. Most of them wanted the character they were dressed up as on their face, or a princess design for the
The lottery is a major traditional event that is held every year in the town square. The lottery is when one member of the town is chosen to be stoned by all the friends and family members of the town as an offering to have a fruitful crop growing that season. Shirley Jackson manages to portray a steady tone throughout her short story. This tone indicates a type of friendly atmosphere in the village welcoming the lottery as a festive event like if they were celebrating a party, or a square dance. In the lottery Shirley Jackson mentions at the beginning when the people are gathering in the town square how the women are greeting each other and gossiping.
