DRINKING AND DRIVING AWARENESS Topic: Addressing the drinking and driving problem. Organization: Problem/Solution Specific Purpose: I would like to alert my audience that people should be made aware of how severely driving under the influence can endanger other innocent drivers. I also want to encourage them to sign an oath as a constant reminder to promise that they will not endanger others by driving under the influence. I. Attention Getter: Ask 100 people if they think drinking and driving is acceptable and you will get the same answer from all hundred of them, it will be a no. Ask the same 100 people how much they can drink and still drive, you will have a hundred different answers. When is too much? Four beers, two glasses of wine or until you feel fuzzy? II. I also know of another McAllen family who suffered a horrible loss this year. A 21 year old, male, UTPA student, whose name I will not reveal, drove his car into a 19 year old man’s bedroom and killed him while he was sleeping. His mother was in the same room as him and had to be pulled out from under the vehicle and was later hospitalized. I actually know both the victim and the driver and got to how both sides suffered, differently, but still suffered nonetheless. Transition: It is clear that people need to be more informed about the dangers of drinking and driving. A solution is desperately needed before more innocent lives are taken. III. The solution I propose is to prevent drinking and driving by building awareness towards the topic.
