DOLPHINS: Dolphins are mammals which are found worldwide and are considered to be among the most intelligent animals. Their friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them very popular in human culture. There are almost 40 species of dolphins. They vary in size from 1.2m and 40kg up to 9.5m and 10000kg. Dolphins are different from other mammals, they do not have hands or paws, feet or hair like humans and other mammals do. The dolphins have a dorsal fin like sharks, two flippers and a tail that is like a shark called the fluke. The skin of a dolphin is very smooth like a human but these mammals are very sensitive meaning they can be damaged and get hurt easily. Dolphins do not have a nose but instead, they have something called a blowhole which is like a nose for dolphins, it located on the top of the dolphins head so that when they come up for air, it would be easier for them to breathe. Dolphins are social, living in pods of up to a dozen individuals. They communicate using a variety of clicks, whistle-like sounds and other vocalizations. Dolphins can establish strong social bonds; they will stay with injured or ill individuals, even helping them to breathe by bringing them to the surface if needed. Dolphins can leap above the water surface and perform acrobatic figures. Play is a very important part of dolphins' lives and they can often be observed playing with seaweed or playfighting with other dolphins. They are also famous for their willingness to occasionally approach humans and playfully interact with them in the water. There have been reports of dolphins protecting swimmers against sharks by swimming circles around the swimmers. Because of their high capacity for learning, humans have trained dolphins for many purposes. Dolphins trained to perform in front of an audience have become a favorite attraction.
