Kari Herbert, the author of the memoir, ‘The Explorer’s Daughter’. Uses a variety of techniques to describe and inform the reader about narwhals. Firstly, the author uses personification, ‘The narwhal catching the light in a spectral play of colours’. The word ‘play’ could suggest that the writer believes that the light is like a child. This is because when you think of play, you think of a child, and children play. Also the words ‘sharp intake of breath’, could suggest that she is amazed or stunned by the sight of the whales and what she has seen them do. Secondly, the writer uses a lot of adventurous vocabulary, ‘pods’, ‘fjord’, ‘blubber’, ‘scurvy’, ‘tupilaks’ and ‘predilection’. This could suggest that the writer has aimed the memoir at a higher age range, or she wants the reader to think about the text and she might also want to give you some scientific understanding, because she is showing that she is authorative. In addition, Herbert has used her own opinion. For example; ‘narwhals are intelligent creatures’, this could suggest that she likes narwhals. This is because if you like something you would say nice things about it, this also could suggest that she is passionate about them; this is because she is really interested in the whales. Furthermore, Kari Herbert uses facts to inform the reader about the whales, for example ‘Single ivory tusk which can grow up to six feet in length’. This could suggest that the whales are very large because there tusks are very large, for example ‘a single narwhal can feed a team of dogs for a month’, this shows that they are extremely large animals. Moreover, it says that ‘Blubber is full of vitamin c; this is the reason why Intuits never suffered from scurvy’. However, this information shows that narwhals are very nutritious and healthy.
