The Dolls House: Act 1 opening scene reflection 1. At the beginning of act 1, Torvald calls Nora several pet names. What are these names and what do they suggest about Torvald’s perception of his wife and his marriage? * Torvald called Nora with numerous pet names, on pages 1-3 he called Nora, “ my little lark”, “my little spendthrift”, “ my little skylark” and “ my little squirrel”. From Torvald calling Nora pet names, it shows that Torvald’s sees his wife as an innocent girl and powerless. With the nicknames he used, he compares Nora to fragile and shy creatures and that he needs to take good care of her. Right from the very beginning of the book, the marriage of Torvald and Nora shows what an ideal marriage should be. But then it also shows that Torvald is the one who holds the money, that he is responsible and independent.While Nora is the childish housewife, who is very confident about her looks and she enjoys the money that comes from the hard work of her husband. 2. What can you tell about the relationship between Nora and Torvald in this passage? * The first 3 pages of the book shows that Torvald and Nora really gets along with each other. It also shows that Torvald really loves Nora as he does want her mad at him and he tries to give everything he could to make her happy. 3. Are there hints of possible conflicts at the beginning of the text? Explain * Yes there are hints of possible conflicts at the beginning of the text. Right from the very beginning of the book, it talks about money. On page 2, Torvald reveals that Nora spends a lot of money every time she goes out and Torvald even mention Nora being a spendthrift.
