Ultimately, a play succeeds because of the strength of its story not its stage dressing. The Crucible at the Mosaic Theater communicated the heart of Miller's play, leaving audiences with a strong understanding of the horrible
‘Comedy involves men of middling estate; its perils are small scale, its outcomes peaceful’. To what extent do you agree with this definition of comedy in relation to Much Ado about Nothing*? Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing is one of the most popular comedies in history, selling out Shakespearean theatres until their closure in 1642. The comedy is thought to be written in 1598 and is often described as a ‘problem play’ meaning it shares tendencies with that of a tragedy. Of course MAAN follows Shakespeare’s traditional comedy structure but modern critics have their own agenda that a comedy, being such a complex genre, should conform to.
“Roy is the most effective manipulator in the play.”Discuss. Louis Nowra’s black comedy, Cosi positions the audience to perceive “madness” in terms of the patients and outsiders extreme behaviour and fixation over certain issues. Roy, who is seen as Lewis’ “natural support,” has a vision of the opera envisaging the “music of the spheres, joie de vivre…and a world that is removed from [his] depressing asylum.” Roy’s eccentric nature allows him to be the most effective manipulator in “Cosi Fan Tutte” and his manipulation stems from his passion for the theatre. Similarly, Henry, Nick and Lucy who have different opinions on the Vietnam War are prepared to influence Lewis to have the same outlook as they do. Therefore the effectiveness of the characters
Jared Gnyp SPBHS 5-27-12 ELA 1. Dramatic Irony- occurs when the audience or the reader knows something that a character in a play or story does not know. 2. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet has dramatic irony through out the whole play. Some of them were hard to point out but some were easy.
Her use of intellect makes the play witty - a metaphysical conceit. Edson clearly conveys the concept of 'Wit' through the structure, characterisation, language and themes of the play. Play structure: The title of the play reinforces the idea of 'W;t'. The use of a semicolon ';' in place of the letter 'i' gives wit as one representation of the play's title. In the context of the play, the semicolon
Anyssa Strauss March 4, 2009 Period: 5 Play Report 8: Our Town The title of this play is Our Town and it was written by Thornton Wilder. The genre of this play not common, it is about human experience. However, if I had to choose one I would say the genre is drama. The style of this play is realism. The main characters I would say are the stage manager, Emily Webb, and George Gibbs.
Every individual has his or her personal likes and dislikes in literature. For some, William Shakespeare is a godsend to the literary world and the Adam of the modern-day English language. For others, he is no more than the devil in Elizabethan dress. One thing that cannot be disputed about him, however, was his was his ability to develop round, multidimensional characters within his plays. It doesn’t matter if we have in mind the villainous Iago, the love struck Romeo, or the treacherous wife of Macbeth.
In the same way at the start of Act 3 Beatrice is fooled into believing that Benedick loves her. This can be somewhat connected to the title of the play “Much Ado about Nothing” as In Shakespeare’s time, the “Nothing” of the title would have been pronounced “Noting.” Indeed, many of the players participate in the actions of observing, listening, and writing, or noting. When the women manipulate Beatrice into believing that Benedick adores her, they conceal themselves in the orchard so that Beatrice can better note their conversation. Since they know that Beatrice loves to eavesdrop, they are sure that their plot will succeed. Noting in the play is what can be shown to be the sort of resolution that can create happiness from turmoil and so it has some success in making Beatrice and Benedick believe that they have feelings for each
In Ibsen’s A Doll’s House there are elements of both a tragedy and a comedy, however it is not completely a comedy nor is it fully a tragedy. In my opinion, A Doll’s House follows the structure of a tragedy in the beginning of the play and then follows the structure of a comedy in the ending. One of the major reasons why it is not entirely a comedy is that Nora is not a static character. Though she is a stereotypical silly young girl, Nora comes to a realization at the end of the novel, which is not one of the elements typical of a comedy. We can see that Nora will be embarking on a journey to find herself when she says, “If I’m ever to reach any understanding of myself and the things around me, I must learn to stand alone.
Cosi touches on the themes of politics, love and madness, but offers no definitive answers. Do you agree? Cosi is a splendid play written by Louis Nowra about the theatre, madness, sanity, illusion and life. Cosi especially touches on the themes of politics, love and madness but offers no definitive answers because the entire play is not revealing or seeking for any, therefore is no right or wrong answers, it is just a discussion on point of views from different persuasive to overall make a point and develop a better understanding on the themes within the play to the audiences. One of the obvious theme that is found in Cosi would be madness because since the play is set in a mental institution in the 1970s, in the institution you will be introduced to all different type of characters, the audience will receive a different kind of madness from each of them such as madness within drug addiction, madness from the experiences in life, madness from an obsessive personality and etc.
