Yes, College Is a Smart Choice As post secondary education is more available and accessible in U.S., parents, teenagers, and educators start to turn their attention to a new issue: whether attending college education is a wise choice when the benefit is compared with the cost? Although there are many pungent criticisms pointing to higher education’s large amount of cost, the merit of advanced education should not be neglected. When considering the high salary reward, abundant job opportunities, and more thorough understanding of matters that college education can provide to it’s students, people have to admit that attending college is a good choice. For middle class American families, the tuition fee is mostly being concerned today, before going to college. The current U.S. student tuition, books and living cost for one college year is at average of $30,000, which certainly is a significant financial burden for middle class families. However, there are many public service programs run by the U.S. government or other institutions that target on helping families with financial difficulties to pay college tuition. For instance, with the goal of offering more people to attend college, the Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS) has worked on increasing access to need-based student aid. There is specific financial aid policy targeted at: “ensure that students from all backgrounds can get a college education without taking on crushing debt or excessive outside work that reduces the odds of completing a degree or certificate” (National). Besides that, American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is also trying to ease college tuition burden for American families. In 2011, ACTO supplied substantial financial aid that offered help for “more than nine million Americans pay for college in 2011” (National).
