Do you agree with the view that “Mary Seacole and Not Florence Nightingale was the real angel of mercy during the Crimean war”?
The Crimean war took place during the years of 1853 and 1856. In the nursing industry, the Crimean war made famous the works done by Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale, who pioneered the nursing practices while caring for British soldiers. As a result of this the “Angel of Mercy” persona was created. There have been different views to who was the real angel of mercy, Florence Nightingale or Mary Seacole. In this answer I shall be comparing the two views and try and reach a verdict to who was considered as the real angel of mercy.
Mary Seacole was born in Kingston, Jamaica, with a white Scottish officer and a free Jamaican Creole woman as parents. Her nursing abilities were acquired through her mother who was a Doctress. When she heard about soldiers in the Crimea were not being treated very well, she sought to find a way to the Crimean in order to put her nursing skills to good use. One way in which she had thought that would get her to the Crimea was to go to the British War office and plead to be sent there. However, the war office rejected her request; Mary Seacole thought that her rejection was down to racism, and that the American racist society was also being reflected in Britain. Despite being rejected a passage to the Crimea, she funded her own way there with the help of Thomas Day.
On the other hand Florence Nightingale was born to a wealthy family with no nursing history. Her family was from a very high social class, which resulted in their thinking that the nursing profession was not respectable and also a suitable job for a person with the kind of stature that Florence Nightingale had. Their main expectation of her was to make a good marriage and raise a family. Despite this, her determination to become a nurse was very
