In the world of law enforcement police officers have many different tactical ways of apprehending a criminal and more are being developed every day. A few examples of these tactics include: lethal and deadly firearms, non-lethal firearms, such as pellet guns, electric Tasers, batons, high-pressure water, tear gas, and canines. I will be looking at and analyzing the use of canines and the different techniques they are trained to use. Scientists and engineers are continually developing tools that are far more advanced than most people would have imagined; however, canines are a tool that cannot be matched and far exceed that of existing technology. This article will give the readers an understanding of how these dogs are used and why they are used. Charlie Mesloh, an Assistant Professor and Director of the Weapons and Equipment Research Institute at Florida Gulf University, wrote an article entitled Barks or Bites? The Impact of Training on Police Canine Force Outcomes. Mesloh starts off by giving a good explanation and history of canines’ aid for humans. Police agencies have used canine dogs to help in the detection and deterrence of crime for several decades and many have used canines in assisting work for thousands of years. Some people in today’s society have been questioning the way and the reasoning behind the use of police canines. Many people think the canines are being used prematurely and inappropriately in the apprehensions of criminals. In the article, Mesloh discusses the different apprehension techniques dogs can be trained in. The two techniques he talks about are the bite and hold method and the bark and hold.
