According to the associated press, in the 2010 census, 26 percent of food stamp recipients are African-American, 49 percent are white, and 20 percent are Hispanic. Depending on what political spectrum you fall in, you will either be against or for some type of welfare reform. Welfare reform can be good or bad depending on what is changed. Some parts of welfare reform will help to extend insurance to millions of people, also to help provide federal subsidies to help lower and middle income Americans to buy private coverage. It would also help them to not be denied coverage on the basis of having a pre-existing condition. The Republican Party this year has taken a strong stance against the use of food stamps. By calling the United States a welfare state, they are currently using food stamps as an example of what’s wrong with helping other citizens attain food. Gingrich has spoken strongly against the use of food stamps, stating that he would encourage blacks to demand a paycheck and not food stamps, while Santorum has also said he does not want to “make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” this are very strong examples of what some groups in the united states believe is wrong with giving people aid for food. Opponents of these views say that food stamps are necessary to help those who could go hungry if they did not have these types of programs. However even poverty experts say that the proposal is wrong because even well qualified individuals can’t find jobs in this economy. This means that parents with no education, or work experience are expected to find a job within two years or else they will lose government help. There have also been propositions that have already passed in many states to have mandatory drug tests to people who are on welfare. By making mandatory drug tests they are insuring that the money that people on welfare attain is not being used for drugs. Advocates for the poor however, say that if you only test people on welfare, then you are single them out. If you are going to test people on welfare then they say that all government officials should be tested as well. They also believe that by not allowing them to get benefits you are also making them harder to attain food but at the same time not giving them treatments. Advocates for the poor strongly believe that there should be an increase of treatments for people who use drugs instead of trying to criminalize them and punishing them without helping
