I would characterize their business model as keeping operations simple and consistent. Gary Kelly, the CEO of Southwest Airlines (SWA) is quoted as saying, “Our people are our single greatest strength and most enduring long-term competitive advantage”. The employees of SWA are just one example of how SWA business policy differs from other airlines. SWA has a best in the industry employee to ratio, the only hire 3% of those interviewed. They also offer profit sharing which encourages the employees to help make SWA successful.
They are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Their type of business organisation is in the private sector. British Airways is owned by shareholders. If the business goes into debt each shareholder will only lose the amount of share capital they have invested and not their personal possessions and they will decide what will be done with profits. The government is not involved in its running.
In 2010, 9 out of 10 residential students returned to school full time or worked part time and finished school. The program also monitors their graduates for a year after successful completion and found that a year after leaving the program, over 90 percent of their students were in a home or community setting rather than a juvenile correction institution or mental health facility. The average resident of the ranch stays approximately 12 months. It is on a voluntary basis, so the fact that they stay almost a year on average is a testament to the effectiveness of the program. One of the things that I would change about the program is the criteria for the substance abuse program.
Building an Ethical Organization Part 1 HSM 230 Dionne Haynes 1-29-2012 Today we will be discussing for-profit or non-profit organizations, what is the difference you may ask? “A business or organization whose primary goal is making money is - a for profit organization; as opposed to a non- profit organization in which the main goal is focused on helping the community and is concerned with the money that is necessary to keep the organization operating.” It is very interesting that the topic for this essay was “Building an Ethical Organization”, because I am currently in the process of researching the requirements for opening my own an non-profit corporation. I am in the
This means that Oxfam is an organization that provides goods and services to people. The services Oxfam provides to people around the Globe include giving access to clean water and also building clinics and schools in countries so that health and education is available to more people. These are just 2 of the many services Oxfam provides as a charity. Furthermore, Oxfam also has charity shops in countries such as the UK, France and Germany through which they sell donated items. Oxfam is also the biggest second-hand books retailer in Europe.
They are a non-profit organization. They manage funding well which in turn allows them to serve more families and communities around the world. Habitat for Humanity has stressed the importance of strengthening a community by programs through a revitalization initiative. Habitat for Humanity is seeking new ways to help families in need of housing in many local areas across the United States and other areas in the world. Ten percent of the repair work done in 2008 was done by U.S. affiliates.
These communities may be as small as your neighborhood or as large as the whole country” ( T. Long, para. 4). Some demographics are offered through the services in which the organization helps support those in need with dental, health, alcohol, maternity, and child care along with plenty of others. An example of how many children the specific county has helped is dental care through the programs “This school-based program offers free protective dental sealants (plastic coatings) on the back permanent molars of 2nd and 6th grade students in the Columbus Public Schools. A dentist screens the students who have parent permission and teams of dental hygienists and dental assistants place the sealants with portable dental equipment at the schools.
The Kiwanis Club promotes health and education and also focuses on encouraging leadership. This is done by sheltering the homeless, feeding the hungry, mentoring the disadvantaged and encouraging community service. All of the Kiwanis Clubs combined average six million community service hours per year. The Kiwanis Club’s symbol is the earth, which represents their mission because they help people all around the world. One way they bring justice to others is by a project called “Read Around The World”.
An organization can deter costly government regulations by being socially ethical and responsible “The concept of social responsibility proposes that a private corporation has responsibilities to society that extend beyond making a profit.”(Wheelen, T. L., & Hunger, J. D. (2010). The organization should consider the communities needs before a strategic plan is developed and should determine the best course to meet the communities and stakeholders expectations. “Social responsibility, therefore, includes both ethical and discretionary, but not economic and legal, responsibilities.”(Wheelen & Hunger (2010)).An organization by being in good standing in the community where the business operates tends to develop a loyal customer base. A loyal customer base trends to adding value to the organization which meets stakeholder’s expectations “A firm can fulfill its ethical responsibilities by taking actions that society tends to value but has not yet put into law.” (Wheelen & Hunger (2010)).The organization can keep government regulations down by becoming socially active or responsible. An example would be Coca- Cola adopting a concept of only allowing diet drinks to be sold to high school students and water to be sold to middle and elementary students.
Eventually, Bill Gates knew that his money and his wife could help the rest of society as his mother had done as a civic leader. In the year 2000, Bill and his wife Melinda formed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation’s primary goal was to further the support of education and health in low-income communities around the country. In 2006, he stepped down from full time at Microsoft to dedicate more time to the foundation. Bill Gates and his wife have donated $28 billion dollars to charity to support their cause (Bill Gates, 2011).
